Data retrieval error - solved

I get this error from time to time and assumed because i use star link that a cloud caused a brief issue or something, but now i can’t log in.

Anyone know a solution?

Diablo 3 works fine.

I tried a solution i found online to delete the recently modified game file then run scan and repair, but the game can’t reach character select.

Edit: Currently working on a reinstall, will update.
Edit2: Reinstall D4 seems to have corrected the issue

I had the same issue with my father’s laptop. We share a Starlink connection across the property here.

His laptop started having the same error. After reviewing the logs, I found the CASC file system (that the data files use) was not allowing the game to access them, and causing the Data Retrieval error.

Repairing the game files also did nothing. Since his was a laptop and was running without the high res packs, I used my laptop (same kind of setup) to fix it. That was done by deleting the game folder on his laptop and copying my game folder to his. Instantly solved it.

In a sense, its the same fix as you, I just didn’t have to download the entire game from the internet.

But nice to hear a confirmation. I am confident it has nothing to with Starlink itself, that is most likely a coincidence. But you can use your app to monitor your Starlink performance and how the connection looks. Hopefully it has few obstructions. But yes, if you have any obstructions that cause mini-disconnections, it can cause game issues.

I have been using it for over 3 years now, still running the original round dish version. I have noticed a significant improvement over the years in its performance thanks to the continued addition of satellites to the constellation network. Has lowered the required angle of view and increased the reliability significantly.

I’m also a local installer for Starlinks in my area, have done nearly 100 installs. Some of them are quite complex too, such as some multi-resort cabin setups, linking distant buildings together with wireless bridges, etc. Even our own property here.

But it has been more reliable for gaming than it used to be a couple years ago. I do run a DSL back up internet for gaming, especially if I play any Competitive games like Overwatch 2. But I have been rarely using that in recent months.
