Damage Over Time Is Too Weak

I’ve mentioned this 3 different times and still it hasn’t been addressed. DoT needs to be buffed across the board and needs to damage bosses, it becomes an irrelevant damage source very quickly to the point where it’s a useless stat to even bother with. Please fix this before the season 8 launch.

Not gonna happen.

DoT builds can be strong, but dealing it over time inherently means you are forced to wait. Waiting goes directly against Pit timer mechanics.

My suggestion is to give DoT abilities CDR. Allow the CDR stat to universally increase DoT damage by Y%(x).

So 15% CDR would be a 15%(x) damage boost.

Often times games use Attack Speed for the same purpose.

True. I think Attack Speed, CDR, and Crit should all contribute to DoT scaling.

It will take some time to buff DoTs to a point where builds are getting strong enough to compete.

  • The Necromancer for example has a key passive that is completely useless in its current form.

  • DoTs cannot crit, unless you count Paragon Legendary nodes that are capped too low.

  • DoTs cannot overpower, but should there be a mechanic like a key passive which let’s DoT effects crit and overpower?

A big part of making DoT builds reasonable should be nerfing overpower. Especially the additive bonus from the huge difference between base life and max life of more than 10000 % is a big problem.
That bonus could easily be divided by 10 and still be strong enough.

  • There are a few newer mechanics for DoT builds like instant kill if enough dot damage accumulated and faster dots in season 7.

I think Blizzard is trying out some ideas, but this will take more time. The balancing of D4 is on a good track, but it’s a long way to go.

That or attack speed but I agree completely this is a much needed change.

I agree completely it feels terrible to play and does not fulfill the class fantasies compared to skills that do all their damage upfront and end up doing significantly more damage in a shorter amount of time.

They could leverage multiple stats to make them useful. For instance, critical chance and critical damage could be normalized into it so each tick deals the average damage of ticks if they could critically hit. I wouldn’t use CDR specifically as that’s about when an ability is usable, not what it does, but I would have attack speed decrease the gap between ticks (or if that’s not mechanically possible, be normalized into their damage as well.)

Far as I’m aware since I started playing D4 attack speed has always ramped up dot speed. Or that was the info I found hidden buried under lots of rando junk.

In fact I bet dot builds work fine when maxed out but nobody has time for that especially when you do high pits.

People told Blizzard that this nerf was going to be a problem - but Blizzard being Blizzard ignored all valid feedback and hamfisted collateral damage nerfed things as per usual.

Seriously. Blizzard games have some of the worst balance out there until they stop trying to balance things. They’re just not good at it.

DoT is suitable in ARPG games but not in ARCADE games like Diablo 4.

that’s why it feels unspeakably odd when you see a sorc player already blasting 2 screens ahead of you in helltide, while you’re still waiting 2 more seconds for your group of DoT-marked monsters to die.

Its your build. Seriously not being negative just stating the obvious. Check your build and make sure you have the thresholds reached for DoT to work correctly. You can see it on the health bar of bosses…brighter red (lower) lighter red (upper)…that upper side (lighter red) is your DoT hitting in chunks.

They claim they are addressing some DOTs but on a class/build basis.
Like Bleed for Barb
and Poison Trap for Rogue

By Season 27 they should get around to most people. :hamster:

Reading your statement watched it be edited twice in real time…thought i was not reading it right. LOL

Its a video game i cant believe you guys are crying about it. How immature.

Am i doing it right?

yeah s27 looked like people might mistake it for a typo so I typed it out.

It boils down to how much you know what your class does/can do. Trying to get lots of crit damage but your crit chance is 5%, its not the game, its YOU. Learning your class/build is key to making the most of it.

Guilty! I initially read S27 as S7 and thought WTF is this guy saying? We ARE in S7. Too much time on the forums today for me lol

There needs to be a way to increase the damage of damage over time the longer the dot lasts to make it viable.
