D4 shows grey screen then doesn't launch

Started up my computer then started Blizzard app to launch D4. Game wouldn’t launch.
It would show a grey screen for about 3 seconds then nothing would happen. I’ve tried several times and game simply doesn’t want to launch, it shows grey screen then no launch with no error code.

Troubleshooting that I’ve tried:
run as admin
clear D4 cache
scan/repair
modify install (unchecked hi-resolution)
disabled all background apps
disabled anti-virus

my system
i9-13900KF
4070 rtx
16gb ram
windows 11 home

game was working perfectly okay last night I changed nothing, didn’t install anything new no updates nothing…it just decided to stop working this morning.

to answer all your questions yes I’ve updated the BIOS which was weeks ago due to the 13th and 14th gen issues. GPU drivers are up-to-date…currently am installing windows updates and reinstalling D4…if that doesn’t work idk what will.

Have the same issue as well. Was fine until this past few hours.
Have tried repair and reinstalling as well.

Just did a full re-install and windows update and it’s still giving me the grey screen…what a joke.

I want a refund if I can’t play the game

Been playing since beta, never had this issue. Started last night no idea what’s going on.

ic…so it could just be our video card i guess
maybe Nvidia will come out with drivers soon to address this

Hmmmm yeah I’m also using a 4070

Same exact issue, but I have a 4080 Super, so I doubt it’s the video card. NOTHING has changed since I was playing last night. No game updates, no system updates, nothing. I have a grey screen for a few moments, then the game crashes back to the desktop.

i have same issue on 4070 Super

guys this dudes post worked for me:

ame here. Funny thing is, it was working fine earlier in the day, before a reboot. No change in Nvidia driver, no change in patch level. I did get this out of event viewer:

Faulting application name: Diablo IV.exe, version: 2.1.0.61504, time stamp: 0x678ec02d
Faulting module name: sl.pcl.dll, version: 2.4.10.0, time stamp: 0x6647e70d
Exception code: 0xc0000409

For fun, go ahead and rename the sl.pcl.dll to sl.pcl.dll_backup. Shockingly it will launch (no file integrity checks in the client, clearly) but the 3D assets will be totally black, and 2D interface UI will be displayed. Scan and Repair replaces the file, and it crashes on launch again.
Question is what happened over the last 4 nights that caused an incompatibility with the same patch level and the same nvidia driver in that time that would be loaded via reboot cycle via the OS?

f/u:
Confirmed: use the rename trick to just get the blamed thing to launch, then go into Options → Under Graphics, set Resolution Scaling to None. Basically the fix is to disable the poor implementation of DLSS.
Also confirmed reversibility - re-enabling DLSS causes the rendering to go black again.

To be fair, this doesn’t answer what happened in the last few days, but it does get the game back to a functional state. Hope this helps any dev browsing through the forums.

EDIT: the game now launches NO IDEA WHY DO THIS IT WORKS.

sorry but where is this file located?

This guy’s fix worked for me.

How to fix gray screen failed launch - Technical Support - Diablo IV Forums

the new drivers just dropped and it worked bro, but if its still bugging out on you, the file is found if you go to game to the gear in the launcher, where it is installed, and do that trick

You can go to the Nvidia website and just download the latest one. I don’t trust their app and usually never install it because I don’t like having extra software running that I don’t need.

Speaking of which, have you checked today’s NVIDIA driver release of 572.16?

I know it dropped, yes. Is that what you mean?
