Full Metal Alchemist: Alchemy
Alchemy (錬金術 Renkinjutsu ) is the ancient metaphysical science/mystical art of manipulating and altering matter by using natural energy. This act is known as “Transmutation” (錬成 Rensei )
Deconstruction - Using energy to break down the physical structure of the identified material into a more malleable state so as to be easily reshaped into a new form.
Reconstruction - Continuing the flow of energy so as to reform the material into a new shape.
The proper application of this craft requires not only a full understanding of chemistry and ancient alchemical theory, but also a sort of natural talent towards recognizing and manipulating the physical objects with energy, which require uncommon levels of intelligence and aptitude.
Those remarkable individuals capable of studying and practicing alchemy are known as Alchemists
the basic tenet at the very foundation of all alchemy is that of Equivalent Exchange
alchemy is often viewed as magical or miraculous by those unfamiliar with the craft - but it is a science and as such is subject to certain laws and limitations, all of which fall under the concept of Equivalent Exchange (等価交換 Tōka Kōkan ): “In order to obtain or create something, something of equal value must be lost or destroyed.”
The Law of Conservation of Mass, which states that energy and matter can neither be created from nothing nor destroyed to the point of elemental nonexistence. In other words, to create an object with the mass of one kilogram, at least one kilogram of material is necessary; destroying an object with the mass of one kilogram would reduce it to a set of parts, the sum of which would have the mass of one kilogram.
The Law of Natural Providence, which states that an object or material made of a particular substance or element can only be transmuted into another object with the same basic makeup and properties of that initial material. In other words, an object or material made mostly of water can only be transmuted into another object with the attributes of water.
Wild Magic:
When too much is attempted out of too little, what occurs is called a Rebound , in which the alchemical forces that are thrown out of balance on either side of the equation fluctuate wildly of their own accord in order to stabilize themselves - taking or giving more than what was intended is often unpredictable and catastrophic in ways such as accidental mutation, serious injury, or death.
In order to begin an alchemical transmutation, a symbol called a Transmutation Circle (錬成陣, Renseijin) is necessary
1 transmutation effect = 1 specific circle:
Inside the circle are specific alchemical runes.
Unfortunately, these experiments have given birth to a dark and sinister side of alchemy.
Whether out of despair, malice or inquisitive hubris, several alchemists have been known to attempt the application of transmutation to the human body and/or soul, in essence, playing God with human lives.
But, just as the Law of Equivalent Exchange applies to the transmutation of non-living matter, devastating rebounds can occur in Human Transmutation because human lives and souls are priceless according to the flow of the world.
Resurrection
Attempts to bring deceased human beings back to life are the most common practices to be called Human Transmutation
multiple alchemists have endeavored to resurrect dead loved ones, but such pursuits are always failures, forbidden by the flow of the universe and alchemy itself.
it is determined that resurrection through Human Transmutation is impossible because a soul that has left the mortal coil has passed on into the afterlife and can never be called back by human means.
The attempt will cause a rebound
Of the known attempted Human Transmutations, the rebound has been the “taking” of parts of the initiator’s body out of the living world and into the void
in the case of Izumi Curtis attempt to revive her dead child, several of her internal organs were taken
It should be noted that the size of the body parts taken are generally equal to the size of the human being transmuted, in accordance with the law of Equivalent Exchange
Artificial Humans
The next most referred-to form of Human Transmutation is the concept of an alchemically created artificial human, called a “Homunculus”.
all recorded and reported attempts to make one have been failures
Human Soul Binding
Though appearing on no official records, there have been experiments with Human Transmutation involving the extraction of souls from their matter bodies and the alchemical binding of said souls to inanimate objects
Despite the fact that these souls cannot feel pain or die by conventional means, since the “bodies” they now inhabit are not mortal, the act of binding two such different things together is only temporary, as the soul and vessel will eventually reject each other and separate.
Alphonse Elric is capable of transferring a small portion of his soul into multiple suits of armor simultaneously while still maintaining his original body and consciousness.
Human Chimera
Chimeric Alchemy is a branch of bio-alchemy that seeks to alchemically “marry” two dissimilar life forms into a new creature, but even though this science skirts the line of playing God, the prohibition of Human Transmutation forbids alchemists from incorporating human beings into the practice of chimera production.
However, there are alchemists who flout this decree and step across the threshold into monstrous experimentation. Shou Tucker, the Sewing-Life Alchemist, was the first recorded alchemist to successfully create a Human Chimera
the Amestrian government has also been experimenting with this, having created several human-animal hybrids of increasing versatility.
The word “alchemy” is derived from the Medieval Latin word alchimia, which is in turn derived from the Arabic word al-kimia (الكيمياء); Islamic alchemy formed the basis for Medieval alchemy, in the Middle East, North Africa, and Europe. In turn, the Arabic word al-kimia has roots in the ancient Egyptian word kēme (black earth), the root word of Egypt’s native name, Kemet, in the ancient Egyptian language.

Full Metal Alchemist: Alkahestry
Alkahestry (錬丹術 Rentanjutsu?), also called Purification Arts (連弾主 Rendan-shu?), refers to the slightly different form of Alchemy
The idea of “Alkahestry” is built on the practice of fashioning elixirs and, therefore, is mainly used for medicinal purposes; as such, the focus of the craft is the discovery of the Elixir of Life - the key to immortality and eternal vigor - as opposed to Amestrian Alchemy’s preoccupation with the Philosopher’s Stone’s alchemical augmentation properties.
Alkahestry uses a pentagram Purification Circle, rather than the traditional hexagrams of normal Transmutation Circles. This is a reference to the real-life Chinese concept of Wu Xing, in which all five elements are represented in perfect unison by a five-pointed star.
Alkahestry is derived from the real concept of Alkahest, which was believed to be a hypothetical universal solvent. Alchemists in the 16th century highly sought the mythical substance, along with real philosopher’s stones.
In addition to this, similar to how Van Hohenheim introduced Alkahestry to the people of Xing, in reality, the renowned alchemist Paracelsus (on who Hohenheim was based on) is credited with creating the term “Alkahest”.

Full Metal Alchemist: Philosopher’s Stone
The Philosopher’s Stone (賢者の石, Kenja no Ishi), also known by various other names such as the Red Stone, the Fifth Element, also the Sanguine Star, and the Grand Elixir in its liquid form and many more, is a powerful transmutation amplifier
Due to the absolute law of alchemy being equivalent exchange, the stone gives the illusion that someone is able to override that law. Being that it is an illusion, the powers of the stone itself are not unlimited, and only appears to allow an alchemist to bypass equivalent exchange as long as the stone retains its power.
it is known that human souls of those who have passed can be trapped and condensed with certain transmutation circles.
These thousands or perhaps millions of souls make up both the power and physical existence of a Philosopher’s Stone.
It is a frequent misconception that the properties of the stone itself allow someone to override the law of equivalent exchange, but this perception is simply an illusion.
The power of the Philosopher’s Stone allows one to perform feats greater than what one can do naturally, but the stone gets weaker every time it’s used because that power comes from the souls, which get consumed in these transmutations.
When all the energy is exhausted, the stone also ceases to exist.
The raw material of the Philosopher’s Stone is a very large number of human lives, ranging from only one human life, to a few dozens, to a few million, or perhaps even more.
Usually the smaller it is, the less powerful the Philosopher’s Stone.
Red stones
a Red Stone is a separate, artificially synthesized alchemical amplifier modeled after the legendary Philosopher’s Stone.
Much like the Philosopher’s Stone, the Red Stone allows alchemists to transmute without the aid of a Transmutation Circle, bypass the law of Equivalent Exchange in transmutation and even has the power to grant advanced alchemical skills to non-practitioners of alchemy.
However, as an imperfect compound created by mundane methods, Red Stones lack the power of the true Philosopher’s Stone and become unstable after a seemingly random number of uses, causing them to break apart mid-transmutation and run the risk of triggering an alchemical Rebound.
Easily mass-produced, the Red Stones act as the primary mode of nutrition for Homunculi
Red Water
Unlike the methods by which the Philosopher’s Stones are created, Red Stones are manufactured by compressing large amounts of Red Water into a single crystalline form.
This crimson fluid is an extremely toxic-yet-powerful mixture of other alchemical amplification substances and can easily be produced in large quantities.
Despite its high toxicity, it was discovered by the alchemist Nash Tringham that the most efficient and effective method of crystallizing Red Water is to introduce it into an existing biological process like the human body.
Morality is largely the only thing preventing the creation of a Philosopher’s Stone
Despite the horrific method of creating a stone, if one already exists, most have no qualms with using it
The Philosopher Stones break apart and vanish when they are used up; rarely, they will expel a massive rebound just before
The hero could be trapped in a Philosopher’s stone:
Both Ling and Kimblee show the ability to remain self-aware inside the Philosopher Stones of homunculi and even appear as their physical selves.
Sacrifice:
Because every human has a soul, each human is technically a Philosopher’s Stone, allowing a highly gifted Alchemist to use their own soul to fuel transmutations.

Wikipedia: Philosopher’s Stone
The philosopher’s stone[a] is a mythic alchemical substance capable of turning base metals such as mercury into gold or silver.
It is also called the elixir of life, useful for rejuvenation and for achieving immortality; for many centuries, it was the most sought-after goal in alchemy.
The philosopher’s stone was the central symbol of the mystical terminology of alchemy, symbolizing perfection at its finest, enlightenment, and heavenly bliss.
Efforts to discover the philosopher’s stone were known as the Magnum Opus (“Great Work”)
The legend of the stone was also compared to the biblical history of the Temple of Solomon
Alchemists later used the classical elements, the concept of anima mundi
it was reasoned that the transmutation of one metal into another could be effected by the rearrangement of its basic qualities.
This change would be mediated by a substance, which came to be called xerion in Greek and al-iksir in Arabic (from which the word elixir is derived).
It was often considered to exist as a dry red powder (also known as al-kibrit al-ahmar, red sulfur) made from a legendary stone—the philosopher’s stone.
The elixir powder came to be regarded as a crucial component of transmutation by later Arab alchemists
A mystical text published in the 17th century called the Mutus Liber appears to be a symbolic instruction manual for concocting a philosopher’s stone.
The most commonly mentioned properties are the ability to transmute base metals into gold or silver, and the ability to heal all forms of illness and prolong the life of any person who consumes a small part of the philosopher’s stone diluted in wine.
Other mentioned properties include: creation of perpetually burning lamps, transmutation of common crystals into precious stones and diamonds, reviving of dead plants, creation of flexible or malleable glass, and the creation of a clone or homunculus.
Numerous synonyms were used to make oblique reference to the stone, such as “white stone” (calculus albus, identified with the calculus candidus of Revelation 2:17 which was taken as a symbol of the glory of heaven), vitriol (as expressed in the backronym Visita Interiora Terrae Rectificando Invenies Occultum Lapidem), also lapis noster, lapis occultus, in water at the box, and numerous oblique, mystical or mythological references such as Adam, Aer, Animal, Alkahest, Antidotus, Antimonium, Aqua benedicta, Aqua volans per aeram, Arcanum, Atramentum, Autumnus, Basilicus, Brutorum cor, Bufo, Capillus, Capistrum auri, Carbones, Cerberus, Chaos, Cinis cineris, Crocus, Dominus philosophorum, Divine quintessence, Draco elixir, Filius ignis, Fimus, Folium, Frater, Granum, Granum frumenti, Haematites, Hepar, Herba, Herbalis, Lac, Melancholia, Ovum philosophorum, Panacea salutifera, Pandora, Phoenix, Philosophic mercury, Pyrites, Radices arboris solares, Regina, Rex regum, Sal metallorum, Salvator terrenus, Talcum, Thesaurus, Ventus hermetis
The philosopher’s stone is created by the alchemical method known as The Magnum Opus or The Great Work.
The philosopher’s stone is an important motif in Gothic fiction

Wikipedia: Azoth
Azoth is a universal remedy or potent solvent sought after in the realm of alchemy, akin to alkahest—a distinct alchemical substance.
The quest for Azoth was the crux of numerous alchemical endeavors, symbolized by the Caduceus.
Initially coined to denote an esoteric formula pursued by alchemists, akin to the Philosopher’s Stone, the term Azoth later evolved into a poetic expression for the element mercury.
The etymology of ‘Azoth’ traces to Medieval Latin as a modification of ‘azoc,’ ultimately derived from the Arabic al-zā’būq (الزئبق), meaning 'the mercury
Azoth was believed to be the essential agent of transformation in alchemy.
It is the name given by ancient alchemists to mercury, which they believed to be the animating spirit hidden in all matter that makes transmutation possible.
Believed to be a universal solvent, a universal cure, and an elixir of life (elixir vitae), the Azoth is said to embody all medicines, as well as the first principles of all other substances.
Because the Azoth is believed to contain the complete information of the entire universe, it is also used as another term for the Philosopher’s Stone.
One of the clues for the theoretical preparation of the Stone is Ignis et Azoth tibi sufficiunt (“Fire and Azoth are sufficient”).
There are numerous esoteric drawings depicting the Azoth and how it is used in the work of alchemy.
Therefore, it is believed to be similar to the philosophical “absolute” of Hegel’s dialectic.
Crowley further referenced Azoth in his works as “the fluid”, referring to it as the universal solvent or universal medicine of the medieval alchemical philosophers

Wikipedia: Anima Mundi
The anima mundi (Greek: ψυχὴ κόσμου, psychè kósmou) or world soul is, according to several systems of thought, an intrinsic connection between all living beings, which relates to the world in much the same way as the soul is connected to the human body.
The Stoics believed it to be the only vital force in the universe.
a Living Creature, one and visible, containing within itself all the living creatures which are by nature akin to itself.
