There does seem to be a pattern of over-use for some mechanics.
The stand in the circle, the one monster is shielding all the others in EVERY pack in the pit, replaced by EVERY pack in the pit has some shade like minion that can 1 shot you and can’t be attacked.
i don’t really see a problem with any of these mechanics beyond the fact that they are all overused
I personally don’t enjoy the “kill everything in a circle” either. I don’t like it when enemies just spawn in. I prefer it when I run into them organically while exploring, or they repel down like spiders, etc. I know it’s all a slot machine, but give me the ARPG with great art direction, please. It’s what I’m here for and what I paid for. If I just wanted to click-murder endless hordes, I’d play Vampire Survivors or any of its clones.
All of them are kind of trivial. Some are quite annoying though. The “it’s a fire circle, don’t stand in it” is so… pre-2000 era gaming in general too. You’d think we would’ve evolved past that by now.
Some of the murder circle mechanics here or there, sure. We can have some retro game mechanics in the mix. For nostalgia purposes. Copy pastrying them around everywhere and adjusting their presentation? Please no…
“Fun” mechanics are things like Balrog firebreaths, IH Desecrator mechanics, some abilties from Khazra summoners, all of the water snake mob stuff, leapers, those slams from those giant cannibals, etc. Even many of the newer Pit/Tower bosses have interesting abilities as dungeon bosses go.
The point being, the game actually does have a lot of well designed mob mechanics in it. Nearly all of it gets overshadowed by the plethora of pretty murder circle spam. Incidentally, the good stuff cannot shine. It’s a tad… tragic.
