What are some pros and cons to each?
D2R by a mile.
Better itemisation. Better game balanced. Far better UI.
D4 wins in graphics and that’s about it.
Voice acting is equally as good. between the 2 games.
IMHO, D4 is the worst game in the Diablo series.
In my opinion the gameplay in D2 feels really slow and clunky wich is the opposite in D4 and thats my most important factor for a good game.
No…
Voice acting in D4 is way better.
But anyways… the Diablo Tier list goes as follows from best to worst:
D2
D
D4
D3
DI
That’s SO FAR. If I compared Classic D2 to D4 I’d say D4 but LOD was a masterpiece. If(Big if) D4 has solid expansions it could be number 1.
D2 is still my best. D4 needs some work… but its definitely better than D3, just for the art music and story.
D3 barf face
My favorite thing was zipping around the maps in D2. Point allocations was nice, as this added a difficulty spectrum to wearing gear. Every map was Randomized. Monsters had a set difficulty, which allowed for fast leveling of lower character’s. The skill tree was really good, as well.
D3 had a great multi-player aspect. My whole family cpuld play. Grant it, the kids weren’t as enthusiastic as my wife and I. It was still nice playing together.
Im not enjoying this licensing nonsense with D4. For my wofe to play solo, we have to get creative. Im not sharing, as I dont want them to “fix” it. The kids cant play anymore.
D2 on console doesnt allow for local play, which is annoying. But its great for solo play, all the same.
Project Diablo 2
20char
That’s one way to look at it. I can’t even play D2r without getting motion sickness sadly. Tried my hardest to get into it.
Yeah, the game was built when CRT monitors were in use. They have updated the graphics, though, so it isnt as bad.
D2 by a mile.
In D2 it would mean something to find a unique like Windforce cause it took a lot of MF runs and then some. Very rare drops. It meant something for a item to drop.
In D4 I’ve gotten multiple Uniques (10+) and some of the same ones. There is WAY too much loot dropping and 99% is salvage junk. It’s really boring seeing a loot piñata of 99% useless drops.
In D2 I can actually LFG to do things i wanted to do with other player. Baal runs, open world MF, pvp rooms, etc.
In D4, other than other players running around, what exactly was the point to make Diablo 4 an openworld multiplayer game with no way to find groups?
In D2 you could lvl to 70 in a couple hours(85 in a couple more with Baal runs) with the help of a high level player(easy to find with the LFG system in game). And it was massive fun to reroll a new character for a specific build. Many times you would decide to reroll because you found a certain unique item to make a build around.
In D4 leveling is gd agonizing from lvl55 to 100. It’s massively boring to the point where you seek xp overload dungeons, hoping Blizzard doesn’t nerf them. No one likes the grindy af leveling.
D4 has way more quality content in my opinion. I don’t focus so hard on the level grind because it’s awful in every game for different reasons. In D2 I had enough Baal, Mephisto and Cow levels to last a lifetime.
The D4 grind is fine but the problem with it is that it’s not the same for all classes and it takes 3-4x longer to reach major milestones. And if you’re not playing a meta build it can take significantly longer than that. If the grind was more balanced for everyone in D4 it wouldn’t be so bad.
The drops might feel overturned, however that depends on your dedication to farming. Yes they felt more rewarding in D2, however that grind was excessive at times. You shouldn’t need hundreds of runs of the same content for a single piece of gear.
The casual player, and make no mistake the content is geared towards casual players will have a widely different experience than a seasoned grinder when it comes to loot and may take weeks to get those build defining uniques that you are getting 3 of in an hour.
I also like that I have to do the campaign only one time in D4 and have renown and altar boosts wiring for me when I make another character.
For me it’s D4 because I find the grind and loot more varied and balanced.
Nothing to say but, my personal opinion, this game suffer cause no trade and no market between players.
I think it would be better if a drop actually meant something besides a trip to the blacksmith to scrap it.
Its really sad when finding a charm in D2 is more exciting than finding a unique in D4.
Interesting. I had no issues with motion sickness. But, I am playing on a Sony 55" OLED TV that’s 60hz refresh rate I think.
Motion sickness has just gotten worse for me as I get older. I used to be able to do roller coasters but when I took my family to universal studios I couldn’t ride any of the rides because of it.
I have vertigo, and some motion, like on a boat, makes me not feel too good. I had some motion sickness several years ago when playing on a mate’s HTC Vive setup - was very unpleasant.
Hard to say for sure with D2 out for over 20 years + having a remaster and D4 just barely coming out less than 2 weeks ago so it hasn’t had a chance to fully bloom yet, but they’re in the same ball park.
Without getting into the story/cutscenes etc since they’re both great in those regards:
D2 has the nostalgia factor going for it and the remaster does add a lil bit of nice QoL updates to it, both of which i’m a fan of.
D4 takes some positive things from both 2 (skill system for an example) and 3 (legendary aspects for an example) and improves upon em which is nice. Also the WT3+ activities are fun.
As far as cons go, i guess any con that could generally apply to ARPG’s? i have a lot of fun playing both so i don’t really feel any cons/drawbacks to playing either. If someone doesn’t like grindy hack n slash games, ARPG’s should be avoided, for example.
Maybe later in D4’s run i can form a stronger opinion on which i like more but it’s too early to say for sure tbh.
Glad to see that you don’t regard D3 as a Diablo game.
First of all i love D2 / D2R. (so dont sacrifice me)
At this moment i would put D4 above D2. D2 biggest asset and downfall is its simplistic nature. D2 has non-existent endgame. In endgame you just spam teleport and 1 attack spell on same boss over and over again. Its not that fun and it gets boring real quick. Now D4 will hit that same wall for me eventually, but i gather it will take way longer, hence i will have more fun overall. Tree of whisper is kinda meh, but i like helltides, just for the fact they provide valuable crafting mats and im anxious to advance in nightmare dungeons, which already is way more than D2 offers. Also D4 will keep on evolving, it wont stay like this forever.
Thats my look on this topic.
Im here as an observer my only games is d3 and now d4. Im enjoying d4 way more than d3 by miles that being said d4 is not without its issues.
Side question why do people hate d3 so much?
