Everywhere I’m looking online, says the essence drops the first time you kill a lesser evil. I’ve killed Duriel 10+ times and no drops. I can’t complete rank 1 without it.

Same problem here. I killed him with my paladin like 60 times in Helltide and no drop. Already on paragon 50.

Solution: Create a new character, talk to Hadriel, kill Duriel, talk to Hadriel again. Done. All characters share these essences.
This didn’t work for me. Created a paladin, talked to Hadriel to get his first Divine Missive quest after using the first sanctify, killed Duriel, and no gift dropped.
EDIT: Dropped once I leveled up the renown to 3 with two more kills.

I tired everything it said to try. I went on 3 new characters, did a repair scan, left and came back. When I kill Duriel it drops, I pick it up it never shows up in my inventory to turn in. I am completely stuck and no use killing the rest since It can not be completed. Why should I buy a new game of this if this one wont work?

I have kind of the same problem only worse : the only boss is seem to get corrupted essence from is azmodan. I don’t get anything from Duriel, Andariel or Belial… I really am talking about the corrupted essence and not the purified kind. As a result I can’t get anything from the divine gifts quest of Hadriel. For a long time I didn’t even understand why the angel was standing there doing and saying nothing (until I got my first corrupted essence from azmodan). I am currently paragon 102 and playing paladin.
