You can only have a certain amount of active corpses to use, this was patched well before season 1. Normally it’s the most recent ones spawned by either you or your minions if you’re using any. With Blighted Corpse explosion it is capped to 8 active corpse explosions. Using it past that will only consume other corpses.

The cap to active blighted corpse explosions is just a visual limitation. The older ones will continue dealing damage for their full duration, even though you can’t see them.
