Continuous Game Crashing

Diablo 4 is the only game I continually have issues with the game crashing; where I’ll be in the middle of the game, all the enemies will freeze, I will be able to move around the map and the audio syncs but then I’ll just be disconnected. It happens every 10-15 minutes of continuous gameplay. I can play every other game for hours on end and I don’t have this issue. I don’t lose internet connection as I will often be working on multiple monitors with a browser open with no issues. When I boot the game back up, it often takes about 5 minutes for the game to recognize I’ve been logged out and let me play with my character again. When I get in the, game it acts like I died every time and I have to repair my equipment.

OS: Microsoft Windows Pro verison 10.0.22631 build 22631
Processor: 13th Gen i9-13900K, 3000MHz, 24 core
RAM: 64 GB
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 with Game Ready Driver 566.14
Battlenet: Path 2.37.0
Diablo 4 Version: 2.0.5.59712

Pick 2…

Oh hell… pick all 3

*Windows 11 24H2
*Intel 13th Gen
*NVIDIA 566.14

Hope your CPU isn’t shot
Roll back to 561.09 with DDU in safe mode
Try to get off 24H2 and back to 23H2

This happens because you got disconnected.

Doesn’t matter.

Though I would argue that running other stuff while running the game is risky.

That’s probably because on the server you did die.

They aren’t just magically making your armor need repair. You got disconnected, the server took a few moments to realize you were gone, but if you were fighting, then its the same as if you got up mid-fight to put out a fire in the kitchen. The monsters you were fighting killed you and your armor took damage as a result. At least you aren’t playing HC.

As to what was referenced above with the previous post:

The last 3 versions of the driver have been hit or miss with being stable for players. The recommended version is the 561.09, at least for now. You could run on versions all the way back to January and be fine, but you don’t have to go back that far.

Windows 11 24H2 has been causing some issues for a lot of different things. Whether its causing your issue specifically I can’t say.

The CPU thing.

There are issues with the 13th and 14th gen CPUs in that they have the ability to incorrectly request power under load. And unfortunately, the motherboard BIOS may allow this to happen as the standard “defaults” are often way too zealous and cause issues and premature burnout of the CPU WAY ahead of its expected lifespan.

Now if you have been keeping your motherboard BIOS updated regularly and that is up to date, and you set the CPU to the recommended Intel defaults, you should be fine. But a CPU with an older BIOS and the wrong settings will cause games to crash. And if the CPU has already started to fail, its not reversible, it will have to be replaced.

BUT.

Before you try all that, do this:

-Diablo 4 was unable to retrieve necessary data. Please check your connection - #3 by DTMAce-1687

If that fixes it, great. But if you have not updated the BIOS for your system, you REALLY should do that too.

Another possible issue, and yes it can cause drop outs while not affecting other things:

Check for your network card. If its an Intel I225-V card model (check device manager) then you may need to lock the speed for it.

These cards can run (with their auto negotiate feature) between 10MB to 2.5GB speeds. The problem is, most networking devices that people have top out at 1GB standard. 2.5GB ports are out there (I have one) but not extremely common.

So the issue is that the auto-negotiation part screws up and can drop the connection briefly causing a small stall. To fix it, you go to the network card advanced settings, look for Speed & Duplex, and set this to 1.0GB Full Duplex. This usually fixes the issue with that. I myself have this issue. While I have a 2.5GB port, I don’t use that with my setup, as my router is also connected to an 8 port 1GB switch. But my computer will goof up if I don’t lock the speed.
