So, I found time to run some tests.
Just in case I had a problem on my end, here’s a list of other things I’ve tried before WinMTR that didn’t help:
- Updating my graphics card drivers to latest version
- Updating Windows 10 to latest version
- Updating router firmware to latest version
- Updating wireless adapter firmware to latest version
- ipconfig/release and ipconfig/renew
- running tracert
- running pathping
- running tracert on my macbook to see if there was any difference compared to my wifi adapter
- Lowering graphics settings to medium, then low
Things that helped marginally:
- Turning off VPN reduced ingame latency from around 150 - 230ms when idling in the city to around 70-130ms
- changing my dns from 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 to 1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1 (and doing the same for ipv6) and ipconfig/flushdns reduced packet loss from 17 - 18% to 1 - 2% in pathping
Here’s the winMTR test just before I launched Diablo IV. I then went on to play for about 10 minutes in the open world, running around killing mobs and climbing up and down cliffs. I then teleported back to Kyovashad, which transitioned into a loading screen followed by unexplained server disconnect straight back to the character selection screen.

I’m not sure if I’m interpreting this correctly, but here’s what I think the test says.
In game, I get:
- Packet loss of around 2 - 5%
- Average latency of 23 - 37 ms
- Worst latency of 3918 - 4270 ms
Outside of the game, I get:
- Packet loss of around 1 - 2%
- Average latency of 3 - 17 ms
- Worst latency of 100 - 202 ms
This looks like proof that there’s some kind of persistent connection issue going on. It’s just hard to pinpoint the root cause of the issue. Would appreciate any feedback on this.
Also, here’s a consolidation of the issues I’m currently still experiencing ingame:
- Latency spikes when climbing cliffs, jumping over gaps, entering dungeons, Entering or leaving Kyovashad, encountering mobs, fighting mobs midway. Spikes vary from half a second to several seconds long
- Freezes for several seconds when opening my inventory or various vendor menus for first time in a play session
- Teleporting from a dungeon to Kyovashad consistently results in server disconnect
- When exiting the game, it always takes about 2 full minutes. Not sure why it takes so long
