Regarding the plot:
Donan and Neyrelle had personal motivations behind pursuing Lilith. Objectively, I’m not sure why we are trying to stop her, or at least the way we did.
Mephisto is a known enemy. We know his motivations is to destroy Sanctuary.
Lilith is an unknown. We know she wants to devour Mephisto for power, but what she intends to do with said power is unclear.
This leaves us with a few options:
- We can take her at her word, along with hints from the story, that she wishes to use that power to either end the war or protect Sanctuary. This nets us a powerful ally in the war. Enough to turn the tides in our favor.
- We let her consume Mephisto, then we imprison her. This removes both a known enemy and an unknown from the equation. This nets us a slight advantage in removing a prime evil in the war.
- We do what we did, imprison Mephisto, and kill Lilith. This makes a definitive enemy out of Lilith. Given that she resurrects, and she knows what happened with the soulstone, it is only a matter of time before she frees or devours him. That is if the child that ran away with the stone without consultation doesn’t result in some predictable consequence first. This effectively nets us 2 enemies.
My question is why not take options 1 or 2. There isn’t much to indicate that she is lying about wanting to protect Sanctuary or humanity. We have seen her grieve for Rathma and also shown mercy to Neyrelle’s mother / us. We do know she has killed people but in the grand scheme of things, it’s negligible, and it was also mostly to achieve her ends. If we want to be prudent, why not kill 2 birds with one stone?
Am I missing something here? It seems that we chose the worst possible way to get the worst possible outcome.

Take a demon at her word: I’ll let that one speak for itself
-
Let a demon who is currently wrecking havoc in sanctuary consume a Prime Evil and get even more powerful
-
Kill the current threat, imprison a future threat, and hope for the best.
I’m not sure how the 3rd option seems so far fetched.

We CaN’t TrUsT oUrSeLvEs ArOuNd MePhIsTo ReMeMbEr?
- Along with everything hinted from the story, as I’ve stated.
- And imprison them both given the soulstone is attuned to both?
- And guarantee two enemies in the future.
Any insight beyond snarky one - liners would be appreciated. Not helpful.

I wasn’t intending on being snarky, but with YOUR attitude, you’re not going to get much discussion. Cheers.

He wasn’t being snarky. You just ignoring his response because he disagreed with valid arguments. If you can’t handle disagreements then Maybe discussions aren’t for you.

Because story is bad written. That’s just that simple
They didnt use the tree of whispers to eternally trap lillith or mephisto with loraths head.
Missed opportunity for a Horadrim self sacrifice to really put a wrench in the eternal conflicts gears.
Because humans are stupid and make mistakes?
It really is as simple as that. Most of you would’ve made the wrong choice in this story. Hell, most of you wouldn’t have even made it to the end of the story because you would’ve let Lilith take control of you.
Yes, I’m saying most of you are that week willed and easily duped by cons.

Judging by the carnage Lilith leaves behind I see no reason to see her as an “unknown”. The third choice takes them both of the board for now. A clear win-win.

It came across as such.
I detailed why her motivations seem genuine, and gave examples on why that is so. The reply? But she’s a demon. Yes, but her entire character revolves around her rebellion against hell to create sanctuary, being banished, and embracing it, contrasted against Inarius’s regret which let to their conflict.
I also stated why the killings were inconsequential and a means to an end, not out of cruelty. The reply? But she killed people.
If you think that’s about contending with disagreements then yes, this level of discussion isn’t for me, you’re absolutely right.
to be “fair” most of that carnage was cause be Elias in her name :x the only times we saw HER do “evil” was making her deal with Astaroth and the druid who got turned into a river lol… well and arguably the church flashback but that’s more her corrupting influence not her actually DOING anything)
all we really got was SHES DAUGHTER OF HATRED SHES EVIL from the smart people and several flashbacks of humans doing human things that they do when given free reign apart from those 2 specific instances.
Its seems a very short sighted win for a war coined as the eternal conflict, where the winner takes all, all you’ve made is a new enemy from what could be victory.
It is still a reasonable action to take, perhaps not the wisest in my opinion.
I still think that the mayhem Lilith caused was a byproduct of her goals, not her actual intention, and she was gambling on winning her, and sanctuary’s entire existence. A few souls isn’t too much to sacrifice.
I’m still confused on this point, would her consuming Mephisto lead to her going against all we know so far and destroy Sanctuary as well? Even if she was ultimately indifferent about humanity, she would have taken a prime evil off the table, and would still turn that power against hell. An enemy of my enemy, so the saying goes.
Great point, I do recall her stating that she hated how her followers acted in her name as well.
For me the confusion starts in the beginning, warning: Spoilers!
Summary
We don’t know really who we are, we are riding through the snow storm and then Mephisto saves us, because he felt like we will be able to help him, that we can withstand lillith, even before we get fed up with that blood blooms that actually gives us our power?
I don’t get that one, did Mephisto knew already, that we will become that powerful beeing and if yes, how? Was it an order from mephisto to feed us with that stuff?
Beside the fact that this game should have been named Mephisto I instead of Diablo IV for now, the whole story feels like a pilot episode of a series with a starting point to now kick of multiple episodes that actually bring in more of the evils. I expected a lillte more twists tbh, it was pretty linear and not very deep overall. I am curious how it will continue. Hopefully soon.

You’re right, it is unexplained how we fit into the picture here. On one hand we were made an ambiguous hero and on the other we someone fit into the “chosen one” trope. Plenty of people have drank her blood so that couldn’t have been it, even if you weren’t right about how Mephisto had his eyes on us pre - campaign.
We can chalk this up to the main character syndrome storytelling I suppose.

Could be, I’d have prefered to have a little more explanation on that
Summary
Maybe we are an ancestor of the nephalem of Diablo III, but since it seems like that term was eliminated all together for some reason, it might be the intention to leave it in the dark.
I didn’t finished all side quests yet, maybe there is something, somewhere. My biggest hope is Lyndon, but for now he didn’t spoke about his past at all. In D3 he was more talky about his past, not as much as Shen, but I’d love to see some more references to the past titles in D4
Nevermind, I guess we need to wait and see, as I said it feels like a pilot episode, so there is more to come and hopefully it will answer some questions.
And regarding the end choice
Summary
We also have no Idea who Neyrelle is, she and her mother are clearly into gathering information, similar to the horadrims, that girl was really fast in managaing to break horadrim magic etc. Use the soulstone and so on. There also needs to be more behind that.
However I felt the same like you did, the ending was a little strange. Why would you go to hell and capture Mephisto to bring him out? If we kill Lillith anyway, why not just leave him behind in his bubble xD I really hope we will get a follow up soon, I really wish there is a bigger plot plan behind all this…
d4 is only 50 years after 3 so unless we are their kids/grandkids it’s unlikely we are related
plus the only Nephalim that even gets potentially mentioned is the name drop of Johanna (Female crusader’s name in all outside d3 content) but that can EASILY be explained as she passed on the name WITHOUT dying as normal (maybe cause she left to go with Tyreal? so to keep the name thing going she passed it on without dying)

What a lot of people fail to realize is that we lost. Mephisto WANTED neyrelle to put him in the soulstone because Lilith was surely going to consume him in his weakened state. While he’s in the soulstone sure he can’t do too much, but at least he’s safe to recover now. We made an enemy out of Lilith who considered us her children, and just like a prime evil she will be back after she recovers.
Now Neyrelle took Mephisto away and we have no means to keep tabs on him now. It wouldn’t surprise me if he is the first prime evil to be free and then work towards setting diablo and baal free in future expansions.

Trusting demons has never worked out for the people of Sanctuary.
Demons will lie, murder and use people to gain whatever they want. We see Lilith do so throughout the campaign; everyone who puts their trust in her ends up dead or worse. Her very arrival in Sanctuary requires the sacrifice of several people.
Lilith sees humanity as a means to her machinations. She even says that humanity needs a shepherd, implying that she sees people as cattle. Even if Lilith did provide a means to victory over the Prime Evils, things would be worse. Victory for Lilith would merely turn Sanctuary into an extension of Lilith’s vision of hell.
Diablo games have always been hopeless and zero sum. The player stops the most immediate evil to prevent total destruction, but Hell lingers - powerful as ever.
Lilith is simply the most imminent threat. During the campaign, Mephisto and his brothers are lesser threats to be dealt with in the future.
The eternal conflict persists.
