Coming back maybe, but concerned, plase help...?

Sup!

Possibly returning player here, would appreaciate it too much if someone could shed som light into some concerns i have…

I was kinda happy with the last patc pre-DLC with revamped loot. While rendering obsolete previous gear and hence the effort and time put into getting them, i think the change to less affixes and more specif and useful one (instead of verbosse stuff) was something the game really needed. Also the endgame changed appealed to me.

Then it came the DLC, and for me it was really catastrophic. The story was just so bad, a time-waster wich in the end lead to no conclussion at all. And then, a new revamp of items.

So I have been thinking “well, DLC story was awful, but once its finished i could just get over it and enjoy endgame”. But here comes my main concern:

The DLC also came with a “loot revamps” wich didn´t seem to actually change the loot mechanics (kind of fixes you can get) but just the “power creep”.

Im worried that the “loot revamps” become something recurrent as a mean to keep people hooked on the game, farming forever for newer gear, as previous renders obsolete. Ofc, i get that the “endless farming” may be the way to go to keep the game interesting, but the way i see it, there are better or worse ways or achieving that. Lemme expose what I would expect versus what im worried of:

1- You add new gear slowly so people may farm for it, adapt their builds, and go on. Your “older gear” doesn´t becomes suddenly obsolete, but instead may still be valid, or may be able to be adapted and enhanced by the new gear. Eventually, ofc, this could lead to a full new build with new gear, but still you made your older gear worth it while farming things. Lets say, you evolve and progress by degrees.

2- What im worried they may be doing from now on: From time to time a new patch arrives wich just make your old gear obsolete so you start to farm new gear suited to the new mechanics, somehow similar to starting a seasonal character in the sense the “new farming season starts now with this revamping update”. While some people could like it, i feel it makes somehow senseless to farm and upgrade gear as its doomed to become obsolete on the next patch, so you have to start again (-As said, somehow like playing seasonal)

So idk, has something been hinted about how the loot may work in the future, or if more full revamps are to become a expected mechanic?

Thoughts? Thanks.

Its a live service game. Item reworks, changes, etc etc are to be expected. Now i agree that a lot of stuff got changed in a rather short time frame, and i assume thats not going to happen like this again.

However, the need to farm new items will always be there. Every season so far introduced new items, but yea, as i said, i doubt we have to expect any bigger loot reworks in the close future.

Frankly - I wouldn’t trust anything the developers/community folks say.

When tempering and masterworking were released, they said “this is how loot works now on.”

It wasn’t.

The power gap between 750 and ancestral 800s, the difference in their MW caps too, is insane. (And originally, 750s would only allow one temper, which would have absolutely crippled most build concepts and made the gap even wider.)

They said they wanted to stat shrink - but that wasn’t really true either. if you look at breakpoint stats and stuff on 800s, it’s pretty much where the 925s were pre VOH; they pushed everything back away from the goal line; a goal line many of us had already reached. If there was actual power creep with the level increase I would have been okay with it, but there wasn’t.

To my knowledge they haven’t said anything about loot long term, other than they are considering easing up on temper mechanics. But they could just as easily do something and then 180 the next patch. There’s no coherent roadmap or anything.

I’m eternal only and it sounds like you are too; I’ve really backed off how much I play though and honestly, if you’re jumping back in, you may want to consider seasonal. While I have appreciated many of the loot changes, none of them have been implemented in a way that was considerate of eternal players, and some were outright offensive.

oh i can agree. we on our part can only do assumptions, and the devs, can easily change their minds if they deem it needed.

Yeah I know, as said before, the concern for me its not about new stuff beint introduced and (eventually) you get a full new build with full new gear, but i´d prefer it to be something organic and gradual, so your already earned gear is useful and worth it, while being enhanced or upgraded over time with the new additions - Even if in the end this means it may be completely replaced, but as said, on a natural way and retaining its usefulness while farming for newer stuff.

@Japhasca:

Yeah that sums it up for me.

For seasonal players i think there is no problem with it.

But for Eternal players like me, wich like to focus on one or few characters and make them grow over time and keep a sense of progression, this “lets scrap everything earned till now and start over again” kind of patches are really a drawback.

So far i get nothing has been said so its all uncertainty. Guess ill keep playing Grim Dawn or whatever other game wich won´t throw all the time put into it into nothing on a patch.

I think for the time being you safe from needing to worry about item revamps as the items themselves are in a good place currently but obv everything is subject to change

Everything in the game will eventually become legacy at some point. Either in S8 or 10 or 20 ect. Everything is subject to the legacy tag which for uniques should never happen in my view. They could throw eternal players a bone by just stating that uniques no longer go legacy. They just always are the latest version. But they have not done this so your fear is valid and inevitable.

They are drawing out all the power mechanisms into terrible grinds as a pseudo endgame chase and it feels awful. Im not going to come back unless they fix the way it works. Non maxed aspects at paragon 240 something is bonkers.
