When I press the werewolf or bear button I transform but as soon as I press attack it switches me back to human, what am I doing wrong?
Werewolf and Werebear only last 3 seconds after performing a werewolf or werebear action.
Using any non-shape shift skill will send you back to human form early.
Any legendary that turns other skills into werebear or werewolf skills will from then on be cast in those forms.
The only exception to this are unique items that make werewolf and werebear your true form.

I am rather disappointed you can’t stay in animal form without needing to find an item.

You can stay pretty much in animal form if you are using one the basic attacks, when you go to town though you would turn human again.
Also there are passives and paragon which benefit regular shape shifting in case you aren’t aware. That includes shifting not only between bear and wolf but human form as well. It’s more reliant on weaving your shapeshifting skills but it powers up your damage fairly well.

The shifting stuff is quite interesting for sure. I ran a hybrid bear/wolf for a while but eventually swapped back to pure wolf. Once people unlock the key to a quick shifter build it will probably be really fun and strong.
