Can someone clear this up regarding weapon DPS?

Isn’t it kind of useless to have DPS on weapons and have descriptions like, “XXX-XXX damage per hit” when it actually doesn’t even do that? I expected a maxed out basic skill to do at least 50-75% of that dps (after mob defenses), but the actual displayed damages on the skill in the tool bar is like 25% of what the weapon dps displays. After mob defenses, the actual on screen damage is even lower…

How does D4 calculate the dps of skills using weapon DPS?

In other games like POE, there is a range of DPS on weapons too, but doesn’t specifically say that’s the damage it does, but does get calculated into the actual DPS of the skills.

for all RPGs, there is a big butt formula for the damage you deal for any given attack. part of that is a dice roll for your weapon’s damage range so it becomes a small part of the overall equation each hit.

I can’t say d4 follows this logic but that’s the typical flow.

If you turn on advanced tooltips you’ll see that each ability does a % of weapon damage

Skills do some percentage of your weapon’s DPS. Whenever you do an attack, your weapon will “roll” some number between the min & max values, and then your skill will take some percentage of that number to determine its damage.

After mob defenses, the actual on screen damage is even lower…

Enemies have damage reduction at specific levels which you can view in-game if you open your stats page and hover over “Level”. So you can calculate roughly how much base damage your skill will do with this info.

I don’t think it’s meaningless, it’s just a strange system that’s not conveyed well to the player imo.

None of the stats on items do what they say due to background calculations that most of us don’t know anything about. I run my cursor over my bag full of items and never know what item is the best upgrade.
