I’m enjoying Season 4, I haven’t played s1,2 or 3, only played eternal but game stunk and Renown turned me away. I’m now level 96 and realizing it is going to be mandatory for me to get those last 20 paragon points to reach my true potential and this morning I started grinding the renown again. This caused me to already log out and go to the store and run errands. This is a huge buzz kill. I took off work today, planned on playing most of the morning and hitting 100 but this has already killed it for me. I hope renown gets removed or becomes part of the normal gameplay loop like renown for NM dungeons or pit, Helltides, world events, world bosses and not things I have to go out of my way to do, that are boring and tedious.
I do hope the designers consider changing this system, maybe even move the paragon points to the front of the rewards and put cosmetics or something at the back of the rewards. I can tell that this system alone will burn be out long before anything else the game has to offer right now. I was ready to roll another character to 100 after this one, but I’m not even sure I’m going to make it to 100 given the gaping whole I will be left with if I don’t get those 20 paragon points.
Other than this issue, S4 has been a wonderful joy and thank you dev team for doing a great job moving this game in a better direction.
edit: I’ve already logged in my Eternal and transfered over where I left off, which is about 50% of the renown grind. I’m talking about picking up where I left of and grinding it the rest of the way.
If you’ve just returned, log into one of your old characters. If you’ve done the Renown grind, it gives the bottom rewards like the paragon to all characters. You can do the quests and such again if you like, but it’s only for the bonus XP and gold rewards.
I didn’t finish, got about half way on my eternal character. I did log in with eternal so it would transfer over and started where I left off. It just is not fun. Even though it iis a 1 time thing, I just don’t think it’s good design. “Do this one thing that really sucks that takes several days, where every time you log in it is miserable, but you only have to do it once.”
Problem is that it is required to get those skill points. Only reward from it should be some cosmetics or achievements. Noone plays hack n slash to run around on horse and collect hidden statues. I never do those collectibles in other games too.
Do some dungeons and the Strongholds and you’ll be finished quickly, especially if you combo it with a quest for that dungeon (Light’s Watch, for example).
It shouldn’t take you that long at all. Set the world tier to 1 and blitz the strongholds and dungeons.
Yes, it’s tedious - but you only gotta do it once.
yeah, I don’t have 10-12 hour days to do it, maybe 2-4 hours a day. I’m doing exactly as you mention, however, I get burned out after a few. Then sit in town and stare at my guys feet feeling miserable about going to the next dungeon/quest combo. Then I just log out and go mow the lawn. Literally choosing to mow the lawn over play the game, something isn’t right about this system.
Because what I really want to be doing is the next NM dungeon or Pit, or doing the helltides with my friends or family.
Lilith statues also give you permanent stats though. It’s worth doing the statues first then everything else afterward. The issue the OP is having is the discipline to stick with it since it’s so tedious and boring.
I still think they should change Renown and remove skill points from it and from statues. I finished it a while ago with help of a map in web browser but I remember the feeling and wouldn’t want to go over it as new player.
The concept of renown makes no sense, in an MMO wouldn;t a thing like renown determine how a character is treated by NPC’s in different zones? Shouldn’'t renown affect things like prices, the chances for certain tempering aspects, or gambling for relevent items with legendary aspect upgrades? or aspects?
Renown in its current state is just a checklist for minimal rewards that don’t match the effort put nto completing them especially the higher level or paragon renowns. The point distribution should be significantly higher in my opinion.
Kind of depends on the MMO and which group the renown/rep is for in a MMO. MMOs have had rep grinds to unlock bonuses and loot, special items, etc. as a way to keep players logging in daily. Blizzard especially. Rep in WoW is tied to player power in a lot of ways.
Which is a disappointment, because there wouldn’t be anything wrong with a halfway decent faction system that had rewards or more targeted quests like the Tree of Whispers. I’m still hoping something like that is in the works.
Grim Dawn’s faction system was great. I wish D4 had taken a page from their book.
The new Helltides are like a mini faction, but it’s not enough overall.
I would love if there was a Helltide renown system, with permanent perks that only activate inside Helltides, like one-shot aerial one-shot kill fireball immunity or making iron wolf reward caches permanent!
So you desire all the rewards without even completing it once?!?

BTW - they’ve nearly doubled quest and dungeon renown rewards since inception to make it even easier. I seriously don’t get the complaints at this point.
