Butcher life leech seems excessive

First time encountering WT4 Butcher. I’m a lvl 72 blizzard sorceress, he was lvl 73. I guess I’m pretty tanky at the moment because the fight was easy. Only had to use 2 potions the entire time, but it still took what feels like 10 minutes simply because of how much life he leeched back (plus his shields). To do any sort of consequential damage to him, I had to stagger him like 3 times. Eventually he bugged out and started just walking around aimlessly, which allowed me to finish him off.

Either way, yeah, that dude’s life leech is crazy. Could I have avoided it in any way? Seems like he enrages every second, so running away while he enraged seemed mostly like a waste of time. I could just stand there casting Blizzard and he was unable to do meaningful damage to me most of the time. <_<

I wasn’t aware Butcher had a life leech function.

Perhaps in a NM dungeon the affixes that roll on the dungeon also apply to The Butcher?

They definitely do; the Butcher will take on all affixes for NM.

When he ambushes you in a mob while you have Avenger affix, he gets huge, blood red, and very angry.

Thats actually kind of cool, although feels a bit unnecessary regarding certain affixes like extra health or shield damage.

I’m so high up in the NM dungeon range that I just run away from him again because I cant out DPS his fortification currently.

It makes for some particularly nasty NM’s 65+ feeling indomitable at the cry of ”FRESH MEAT!”

I’d love to see more random boss encounters than just The Butcher too.

Honestly? Same; I was expecting the Butcher to be one of a few that may or may not be more tricky than each other.

The Butcher is just an Easter Egg from D1 DiabLoL 1 ep 1 The Meating Room - YouTube

If he manages to kill you, he disappears, which is something I didn’t know until he killed me, when I was a level 90+ sorc doing Nightmare dungeons.

Regular dungeons, no problem.

Yeah, I saw the bit from the game; it’s a nice nod to the original, but I was still hoping for … a bit more. They were baseless hopes so I’m not disappointed. If anything, annoyed at myself for letting my mind wander.

I agree, only NM over 60 do I find him particularly gruelling.

Experienced it myself on the PSN and PC versions of Diablo 1. There are many more Easter Eggs that can be sprinkled in.

Also Butcher was the End Boss for Act 1 in Diablo 3.

The butcher is in some janky state of balance where he is either impossible (early on) or a pushover (late game).

I have never had a “close encounter”. Only those 2 extremes.

Yeah, in D1, it was kind of a skill check, which the Diablol illustrated by the warrior not leveling up before in the first level before going down to the second.

But it still wasn’t fair to warriors. Warriors could only fight at melee range, and only fighting him at range, trapping him in a room with bars could even succeed. Which only the sorc or rogue could do.

Without a lot of dex, the warrior was easily stun locked at that level.

So it wasn’t fair then. You lost all of your gear when you died in D1. Unless you could retrieve it naked from the mob that killed you, or had a set of back up gear that you dropped in Tristram, because there was no stash.

Things like this was the reason I joined a legit clan in D1. When Everquest was released, I foolishly thought “people can’t cheat in EQ, why do we need to make a guild? We can still play together regardless?”

Obviously, I was wrong

He was pondering his life choices because I called him a loser in another thread.

Agreed, conceptually Butcher is one of the best features that D4 innovated, in the genre

Haha same…no way on God’s Green Earth I’ll take him out with that affix. I just stand, die, and res. Also of interest, can’t even exit the dungeon when he shows up…least I was unable to tonight.

I can do so if I have a friend that is capable of tanking him for a few seconds so I can setup Burst DPS. I just can’t kite/DPS him down like I would other beefycake mobs.

My damage is on the low side (I salvaged like 3 Glacial Aspect pieces of gear when I was running Arc Lash, thinking I’d never run Blizzard, and now that I’m Blizzard I can’t find that stupid aspect again, lol), but I was still somewhat proud of myself for being able to basically stand there and fight the butcher toe to toe.

This was a regular dungeon too, aka I’m guessing Nightmare would be a different story altogether.
