i enjoyed the comic relief of the d3 followers, but the d2 followers actually did work (extremely expensive to ressurect though). personally in my opinion, i can deal with it if they left them out in d4. i’m sure people will want them to end up like d3 followers before its said and done and it will just turn into a big o’l mess trying to balance them.
Gold was an afterthought in D2 though so rezzing your merc wasn’t a big deal. In this current season of D3 your followers actually boost your power by quite a bit.
