Blue items in D4 and crafted items

I have played D2 for more than ten years. I really like the design of crafting items in D2, it gives seemingly useless blue items a chance to be useful.

In the last beta, I was pleased to find that yellow items in D4 can be of considerable value. However, the white and blue items in D4 are all literal garbage.

I’m hoping to make this garbage useful with something like item crafting system in D2. Allow blue items with specific names to be upgraded with specific types of gems to become crafted items with specified affixes, and items with different names will have different specific affixes after upgrading

For example, blue leather gloves with ruby can be upgraded to a crafted item with life stolen effect, while blue gauntlets with sapphires can be upgraded to a crafted item with damage reduction effect, and so on.

This concept should be further improved. For example, a blue item can retain one of its original affixes when it is upgraded. Or you can combine different types of gems to adjust the type of the specified affix after upgrading.

I really, really want D4 to be more fun and enjoyable. I think D4 has a very good foundation and I implore the devs not to waste it.

Totally agree. I was bummed to find out that common and magic items only value was the gold or materials you’d get from selling/junking them.

I feel this wastes potential of what could be another system for the game, at the same time offering another decision to make: “Should I junk, sell, or craft on these items?”.

I’ve never played D2 but from what I’ve seen the crafting system is the least you could ask for. It still has the element of randomness while still providing some determinism.

I believe that crafting system will be introduced to us at some point, most likely through a season with some inspiration drawn from D2.

With blue items the idea is that they will have the highest affix rolls even if they have the lowest amount of affixes. However, this level of optimization is generally not going to matter at lower level. As for whites, they have said they are planning on adding runewords at some point, they just have to figure out how to do it so they fit into the balance first.

Agree your point.
So far we found nothing on the white and blue items on D4.
Just be the materials and the outfit looking stuffs.

But I think it will be the big thing to change all of the item ecosystem.
Hope the D4 design team still figure out what is the one good for best, not just decided the design of item system and end of the life cycle quickly.

It should be the long term way to dig out more further possibility.
