Blizzard, You Claim You Don't Want Overlay Map

Disclaimer: To everyone that wants an Overlay Map, this post is NOT trying to say we don’t need one, or that I would not want one myself, or anything like that. I’m just trying to put something in the game that I would actually enjoy even more than an Overlay Map. But again… I would want them both.

Blizzard, you claim you don’t want to implement an overlay map because it would “detract from the aesthetic of the game, taking away from the visuals that our artists worked so hard to achieve” (or something REALLY close to that statement… and you’ve said it numerous times).

Fine. I agree with you in fact. Don’t take away from the visual appeal that you’ve created in the game. It looks great! HOWEVER… you do realize that my staring at the tiny minimap at the top right of my screen is… you know… completely taking away from me enjoying the visual detail in your game, right? RIGHT?

HERE IS THE SOLUTION!

When I mark a destination on my map, instead of drawing a line on the minimap, just draw a line right there on the actual ground in the game from my characters feet all the way off screen in the direction I would need to go to get to my destination point.

This way, I’m not staring at that stupid minimap, taking away from enjoying the scenery as I ride around.

I’m not the one claiming that I don’t want to take away from the visuals, YOU are. So do something about it then. Because again, currently speaking, I’m not the one taking away from the enjoyment of your games visuals… YOU are with that stupid minimap and the necessity of it.

How is it related to accessibility?

Why would any dev want to control how a player wants to utilize a map, if its overlay or not? More features for more players is a good thing, trying to restict features by having less functionality doesnt make for a better game.

You got consoles. That is 100% why you can’t have overlay maps and other features.
The consoles have finite resources.

yea the map overlay would help alot improving ui and ease of access to playing.

I’m so sick of seeing this topic.

An overlay map covers too much of the screen and disrupts the enjoyment of visuals. What difference does it make to have what u see on the mini map cluttering your whole screen.

We have all been playing this for over a year, and the map and all of it’s dungeon maps are pretty memorized. You can only see the full map once you traverse the area first, in which the case of something like Pit or a NMD you won’t see any more than what’s on your mini map anyways because it’s always a fresh map

I see no purpose in this feature, it isn’t needed, and I hope the devs keep saying NO… It’s dumb

i mean, i wouldnt mind it being an option for the people really wanting it. But i agree, i personally dont really see a purpose for this feature myself either. The mini map in the corner does what its supposed to do Shrug

Then turn it off just cause you don’t want one does not mean that those of us that do shouldn’t have one

And yet the feature I asked for in this post is one they have in Diablo: Immortal. You know… what people play on their phones.

Take your clown shoes off, you’re trippin’.

Also there are arpgs on consoles that have overlay maps

Bashkar, big fan here. But this is nonsense. Why would the overlay “disrupt the enjoyment of the visuals” if, for you, the mini-map is sufficient? Obviously, you’d never open the big map. You’d never be bothered by it.

As for the difference: I’d see the whole layout, but transparent. Random gen isn’t 100% random… but let’s say it’s random this time: I get a better at-a-glance sense of direction for those maps with annoyingly spaced branches… without opening the full map. Something one can’t do with mini-map. Why want this luxury? For efficiency, obviously.

A lot of people don’t like / don’t appreciate that little bit of added efficiency. A lot of people do. That should be good enough to wish us well. You lose nothing. You’d even be rid of this blasted topic that irks you to no end - bonus!

This is another of those “if they put it in game fine, but I dont care either way” deals for me. Id much prefer a zoom out option for the minimap.

why anyone needs a overlay map ? we have already mini map and world map.

buy on steam

enable the officially implemented in-game steam overlay
(blizzard knew it was there when they pushed the game to that platform)

code and host some pita script/api/whatever site that tracks your location in-game by visual cues

use said overlay to have that page transparent over your d4 experience

ta-da map overlay

you are welcome

That requires me to buy the game again so it’s not a solution

very good points the overlay would help alot of people have better access to the game and enjoy the game more.

After dying with level 100 HC characters - several times with different chars, simply because I have to be in a helltide to see those chest, but the chest is half a region away so it wont show on the minimap. Opening the worldmap in helltide HC and looking at it for more than 2-3 secs means you can get blown to pieces - 3 sec to destroy maybe 10hours playtime. There should really be an overlay, or make the chests visiblie while being in town!!

When I was young, I made my own paper, hunted octopuses for ink, and collected quills to write with. Equipped like this, I created my own Diablo maps in real time.

I am not against it if it is optional. But I would hate that if it would be there every time I pin something in map. I hate this handhold things where game looks like you have some cybertech vision with guides or “yellow is climbable”

I have no problem with line in minipam if I drive somewhere. Can´t talk for other but why I would like everlay is for dungeons to see more easily layout. Don´t need it for OW.
