Blizzard should strive to make every build FEEL like Lightning Spear

Knowing Blizzard, they’re probably going to nerf Lightning Spear Sorc into the ground after this season. Not just the damage (which could use some tuning, honestly), but the functionality of the build. The way it plays, the way it feels, will most likely be gutted.

Much like Twisting Blades Rogue, Ball Lightning Sorc and Minion Necro, it’ll probably feel like crap next season. But, in my humble opinion, this should not be. Blizzard should strive to make EVERY build in the game feel like Lightning Spear.

I don’t mean the insane damage that trivializes content. I mean the overall feel of the build. The synergies. The speed. The fluidity. It just feels good to play. It is FUN.

So many skills and builds in this game feel clunky as hell. Sure, HoTA Barb was powerful for multiple seasons, but IMO it just felt awful. There was no joy in stopping to HoTA every second. It was awkward. There was no flow.

The way everything comes together in this build is just awesome. Paragon meets legendary aspects meets unique effects and the power of mythic uniques to make a build that just feels really good. Blizzard should try to replicate this feeling in every single build in the game.

We, as players, should be able to envision what sort of character we want to play, pick a core skill that seems to fit that archetype, and take off running with a fluid, cohesive build that mimics what they’ve done with LS. That would make D4 an awesome game.

I liked the telestomp with blizzard version from season 3 more than this one tbh

I find lightning spear boring. I only play it because it’s op. Andariel Barrage Rogue on the other hand, now that’s a build I enjoy.

i like ball light more but every build should be able to do the same. its fun. rogue is stronger though if you throw enough gear at them

I too have an Andariel’s Barrage Rogue. It is indeed quite fun. Another build that Blizzard should try to replicate the feel of.

With that said, the high end version that everyone’s recommending with Smoke Grenade instead of Dash is a perfect example of something that feels really clunky IMO.

Smoke Grenade is definitely powerful due to the 25x multiplier, but without 3 charges of Dash constantly being reset with ultimate the build feels 10 times worse. Doing Hordes without the mobility just feels bad.

I only use Dash for speed farming, in horde and pit I use caltrops. Smoke grenade sounds interesting though and I have been considering it

I thought their pre-launch verbiage basically promised that D4 would be like this, but yet again, they fell into the old “this season, THIS build is great, and the thing you enjoyed previously has been nerfed, because we can’t figure out how to balance ANY OF OUR GAMES”.

Couldn’t agree more. Lightning Spear is definitely OP and could use some adjustments to its damage, but the way it feels to play the build is very good. I wish Druid and Necro had this sort of mobility and fun factor.

Definitely give it a shot. Especially for bossing and high tier Pits. If you drink a potion for Unstable Elixirs and Shadow Step into the boss, lay down Smoke Grenade (which puts out the Shade Totem from Umbracrux) and then pop your ultimate, the damage is wild.

Necros did have the fun factor. Then Blizzard nerfed all shadow damage builds so bad that the only things that work now are blood builds or bone spirit if you’re aiming for Horde T7 content or torm boss farming.

I’m not sure how other people feel, but I found Bone Spirit insanely boring. Probably the least fun meta build I’ve played in D4.

As a player that rolls a different class every season, I don’t really give a hoot!

yep, couldn’t agree more. the lightning spear build isn’t cheating nor exploit but rather a great lesson in cooldown reduction, attack speed, focus masterworking, mana generation, and mobility.

I agree with you, but for me, I like Barb WW DD the best for a bunch of reasons:

  • Weakest class according to most players
  • I can equip him with the most Ubers
  • I enjoy spinning in T7 and T8. He is actually not that weak.
  • Moves fast and equally tanky

I have Andy, Landslide, and Blood surge too but I just find my Barb more engaging. I do think though my Andy is the most tankiest of all.

Actually what they said is they will nerf overperforming builds in previous seasons but will allow new bugs and exploits to make new overperforming builds. It’s up to the streamers to find the next bug lol

Theory: streamers are the script kiddies of social media
