Ball lightning damage

Hi folks,

The ball lightning first passive should boost the spell damage by 200% of my AS.

I have 30% AS and ball lightning is dealing 5262 - 6432 without the 200% passive.

With the passive, it now deals 2126 - 2598.

I’m also playing with Esu’s ferocity, with a 50% roll on gloves. When i have the bonus, ball lightning now deals 1700 - 2144.

It seems to tick more, based on AS, but without the 200% passive it will tick the same rate, dealing more damage. Am i wrong ?

Edit: yes i was wrong. Without the 200% passive, BL don’t ticks more from AS.

I don’t know much about ball lightning but when I read your post, it make me think of my ice sorc interaction with blizzard.
The second passive for blizzard increase duration if your mana >50 (btw it will proc with avalanche passive even on low mana). It does increase the duration but the damage stay the same for the duration of the skill , so it reduce damage / hit
Guess it working something similar for ball lightning

Yes, 100% this. In terms of Blizzard, you are probably using the Spikes aspects, so it actually is very useful because more Blizzard uptime = more spikes for less mana. In Ball Lightning sorc, the attack rate doesn’t actually seem to change, but the damage still goes down per hit. It’s infuriating and makes me want to quit playing this game.

looks like lot of stuff just don’t work for our poor sorc. Really such a damn shame. I also notice that the legendary paragon node for CE do not get considered in the chara sheet twords crackling damage. It’s a visual bug? a real bug? who knowsXDXD

It is working as intended. It just takes total cumulative damage and spreads it into more ticks that are smaller. It works quite well for generating a lot of crackling lightning.

I must confess my brain read this sentence with the last word having a double “s” and i laughed a lot out of it.

The Enhanced Ball Lightning tool tip says it increases the damage rate. The Ball Lightning main ability says it zaps enemies for X damage. Higher rate = more zaps for x damage. To assume that Higher rate = more zaps for less than x damage would be a bad assumption.

I’m very disappointed and will be mothballing my Sorcerer until this is clarified as either a bug or working as intended. Much like you I theory crafted an entire build based on exploiting Enhanced Ball Lightning as much as possible, only to land here and find that you noticed the same thing that I did. Once you take the Enhanced Ball Lightning follow up ability, and have high attack speed bonus, Ball lightning is doing vastly less damage than its main ability’s tooltip states.

If this is working as intended, then I’m very disappointed in Blizzard’s ability to utilize English in their ability tooltips. This is not Hearthstone where there is limited room on the cards.

Yes it increases the rate at which it deals its damage by 200% of your attack speed. Meaning the rate at which it ticks is faster not it increases the damage or gets extra ticks.
