Are Uniques Even Useful?

This has been on my mind since I first started playing, but why would I use a Unique with a locked effect instead of Legendary gear I can switch out the Aspects on to make a fully custom build?

Uniques do things that legendary gear can’t. The catch is that you have to focus your build around that unique and take advantage of the correct synergies.

You can’t just throw a unique on without any thought and think it’ll instantly power you up.

Depends on the class you’re playing. For example, Druid requires certain uniques just to make builds function. Some builds even require multiple uniques. A Druid using no uniques is significantly less powerful than one with uniques.

Some uniques are honestly on par with mythics, and they don’t even require tempering!

I must have just gotten bad Uniques, then.

My Spiritborn basically Evades through mobs, which auto casts Storm Feathers. It melts things.

But the Uniques I got are ‘Spawn a Pestilent Swarm every 10 seconds’ and ‘Your Evade is now Soar’, which, by the way, disables the Eagles ‘Cast Storm Feathers when you Evade’.
The only OK ones in this Undercity run were Razorplate for the Thorns, and Flickerstep for reducing my Ult CD when I evade through mobs.

Wow… OP, you just play the game without looking up what Aspects or Uniques are available? That’s wild

“Bad uniques” is subjective. They are incorrect uniques for the build you chose. In order to use those, you would need a different build focused on those effects.

If you google, you can find a list of uniques so you can see which ones are available and determine what might work with your build. They can all be target farmed, so you then just have to determine what to kill to get them.

I just play to have fun and see what I fall into, rather than plan a build ahead of time.

There is some unbalance for unique items since the new class got its first season. But overall I am happy about how the devs designed weapons and non-rings. Some of I would consider overpowered.

The devs stated that in general players should have a mixed set of unique and legendary equipment. It is good to see that it works.

At least for the builds I have been using on my barb there are very few that can function without uniques.

For example right now I’ve switched to mighty throw. Without the third blade unique the throw skill has a cool down and becomes useless. Third blade turns it into a core skill that I can spam.

Before that I was using basic skill builds and again the builds were pretty useless without pain gorgers gauntlets and the basic skill sword.

But using a unique that doesn’t enhance my build is pretty useless of course.

I prefer go all uniques because it cost less to masterwork with 4 affixes.
