Anyone else miss D2 style of gameplay that Diablo 4 doesnt allow for? AND WISH THEY'D ALLOW FOR IT

As a long-time player of Diablo 2 LOD, me and buddies would simply re-run the campaign Normal - Nightmare - Hell and be pretty damn satisfied with doing that. We dabbled in patches that allowed for ‘ubers’ and super late-game material, but the important point here is WE LIKED SIMPLY RUNNING THE CAMPAIGN. Diablo 4 seems to funnel you to super late-game where you endlessly do Dungeons, and I don’t know, gain extra boss powers etc. Now most of you probably like that so I’m not hating, but I’m not interested at all in that playstyle, and there have to be others like me and my buddies. BLIZZARD, I REALLY HATE THE FACT YOU CAN’T REPLAY THE CAMPAIGN AND NOTCH UP ITS DIFFICULTY. I’d love a D2 LOD experience playing D4.

And similar gripe is, the campaign puts a pretty severe cap on the difficulty settings on the initial playthrough of the campaign to the point I can’t make it challenging enough to enjoy. I set it to the maximum difficulty it allows for, and still just roflstomp my way through the whole campaign because I’m one to really optimize a build and gear, and therefore get too strong for the max difficulty allowed. I wish you could access the higher difficulty settings straight away without gatekeeping them like “complete Lilith before being able to one-up the difficulty.” MAKE THE DIFFICULTIES ADJUSTABLE TO HIGHER LEVELS STRAIGHT AWAY BLIZZARD, your game is too easy early on for a campaign-runner player like myself.

And finally, as a campaign guy who doesn’t care for dungeon levels, I really wish you’d just put more of your efforts into releasing EXPANSIONS and continuing the story rather than whatever these seasonal things are. They are boring IMO, I don’t care about collecting whispers or whatever.

Anyone else with this or am I alone on OG Diablo 2 player island?

I got your idea, but it will be hard to implement, since D2LoD is a linear game, and D4 is a open world game.

Anyway, D2LoD & D4 campaigns are just to explore the world the first time and get used to the game world, once donne there’s nothing really good in doing it again…
The “mechanics” is almost the same…

They addressed this at some point and said it would be too hard with the world changing so much… but I agree with OP

Hold on…let me think about re-doing the VOH campaign over and over again…

Oh no…it’s coming…I can’t stop it…hhhhrrr

Vomits uncontrollably

no you are not alone.

But blizz does not care for your enjoyment. Or for a good game. They want you to return each 3 months and redo the same stuff.

I dunno how many people exist that shovel mtx money into the dumpsterfire system but they have to be enough to keep the system going.

I just whish Blizz would dial down on the whole project. Just pick a handful of dedicated developers and let em make the game oldschool.

See when you pump in billions of dollars you are in dire need to make the game profitable like hell. But do we need this? I rather had a smaller diablo project that it more concerned about making a good game. But for blizz every franchise now has to be a game as a service :poop:

yet enough people care for this that they even made D2R and it sold pretty damn well for a 20 year old game with a face lift.

Never change a running system… but here is the funny thing. D3 second addon got canceled even though both D3 and D3RoS where among the best selling pc games of all times. That is not good enough to justify a normal retail game i guess.

imagine how “messed” up your approach ahs to be if you feel you cannot make enoiugh profit even thouzgh you are amongs the best selling games ever.

Other than the obvious PvP I miss the feeling of being able to try any build in d2 with a group like you said and dona normal to hell run from scratch with only what you find. I also miss spending the week trading for items for a new build then on Friday after school just joining games and making it to hell and about lvl 80 and frying in said build for the rest of the weened. Nostalgia is a hell of a thing.

Replaying campaign should be a full endgame activity on its own.

It’s the only thing keeping this game alive. If this game had any other title it would have died many seasons ago.

I have played every Diablo since the first one. Definitely agree with you and having a playable story would help a lot with the nostalgia.

I picked up D4 on the last sale, recruited 2 friends to play with me. The first quit because we wanted to replay the original campaign and know the story - about 2/3 of the way through we hit 60 and 1shot every mob and every bigbad boss. Instantly ruined the game and there was no option to increase difficulty to a fun/playable level unless we continued the very boring very stupid instant 1shot everything to the end of the campaign. Why is there difficulty gating preventing people from enjoying the campaign ever even the first time?

Second friend I convinced to use the skip campaign feature which they thought was really stupid since now they’d also never know the story but they tried it. We got to the endgame and when they encountered the honestly really bad boss design of bosses like Lilith they just quit the game as well. This may be because we played during the boss-focused season 8 but their point was that if the game is going to end in bosses, the encounters should be at all fun or playable and these were very clearly not (which is why everyone just kills bosses in 3 seconds).

A playable campaign would be a very fun way to keep people in the game. I would have kept playing D4 with friends but don’t want to play it solo. Unfortunately without any kind of playable campaign D4 offered nothing for any of my gaming friends and we have all quit within a month of buying this game. By contrast I played every other Diablo game for years.

I personally don’t want this, but I have nothing against them adding an option to take on the campaign at any level on any difficulty tier. I just don’t see it ever happening is all.

While I understand that these are indeed the Diablo forums does anyone actually play any other ARPG? There’s tons of D2 clones with these features available. Go to Steam. Look. Play.

Most are not even $20.

I put over 10,000+ hours in D2. I have no desire to play a campaign over 3x+ on every character. When D2R “fixed” act 3 it was the worse. However, i do enjoy the campaign expanding with each expansion. They do have a progression issue but forcing people to play the campaign isnt the solution.

I do however which they had a cinematic log like D2 where you could juat wach whatever cinematic cut scene

Campaign ?, not necessarily, but WT replay where monsters evolve ?, absolutely

The problem is they introduced Renown and that basically screwed that part, also since S6 there aren’t WTs so that ship has also sailed long

I’m pretty sure D3 could reset the campaign, then you could set the difficulty appropriately. Surely it can’t be too hard to do?

I guess you mean D4.
And yes, D4 already can reset the campaign if you make a new char.
It’s a option when you create a new char…

This was the original vision of D4 when it was released. Most people hated it and demanded getting to the “end game” in 30 seconds. Then complained there was no end game.

Absolutely false. Another guy in another post tried to talk about D2 and i proved he barely played the game.

Sounds like the same for you. There is more lasting content in normal D2R then all of D4.

Lets say ever heard of lld or mld?

The talk is about the campaign ingame mechanic, not content.
Don’t shift the goalposts here…
I agree with you when D2LoD has more content, AMOF D2LoD is the top game of all the D game series…

Dont be so arrogant lol dont shift the goal post.

You literally said the campaign is just to get you to explore the world for the first time.

That is true in some sense if its your first time playing the game other than that there are many many reasons to go back and redo normal.

Shift the goal post lol my god.

Yes! Instead farming Duriel for zillion times until this season and/or playing the same HT or Pits or Hordes over and over and heading back to Tree of Whispers is much more fun after all!!
