Like, why would any human in this world not just commit suicide?
Every city is either constantly beset by bandits, wearwolfs, vampires, zombies, or demons etc etc. Of the cities that do remain, they are controlled by religious burn happy nutjobs, suffering from lack of food, littered with crime, etc. etc. Hell, theres entire cities of Cannibals out there. Like WTF?
Every person you quest for has basically lost every other family member and loved one. Of the 200+ quests in this game, how many ACTUALLY have happy endings? like 5?
I was wondering why there were so many cursed Dungeons and overrun fortresses all over Sanctuary. Why the people hadn’t moved away or destroyed these old demonic strongholds after the nephalem had saved everyone in D1… D2… D3…
But.
Fantasy. Suspension of disbelief. All that jazz. Just roll with it, right?
I just did the quest where you heal the bear and kill the poachers. The druid turns into a bear and helps me murder the poachers, and immediately after, while standing next to her, 3 bears and a handful of porcupines attack me.
I wonder how anyone stays alive at all. There’s some level of suspension of disbelief in every game. Like, you usually can’t map the gameplay loop to the fiction or you get some silly nonsense about wargs appearing out of thin air or how many hundreds of millions of monsters live on a world with a hundred humans.
But the fiction in this game also calls attention to infested fields, demons overrunning cities and just all kinds of events which should absolutely just wipe humanity off the face of Sanctuary. I can’t remember what it was that made my jaw drop in disbelief beyond suspension. I think it might have been the helltides lore.
The constant drab motif in the environment and the UI was a poor choice. So many shades of rust brown and the snow. Don’t get me started on the snow. Bunch of people in California are obviously responsible for adding the super fake copout snow. Monotonous and dreary. Maybe the theme was Seattle or Portland in the winter.
Those born in Sanctuary know nothing but life in Sanctuary.
It’s like asking why people who live in the worst places on Earth don’t just kill themselves. If they know of nothing better, the apocalyptic day to day struggles in such a place is just Tuesday for them. I’m sure most would laugh the question off and be like: “Why rush death? I’m sure it’ll find me soon enough.”
This is a real good take for the in-universe mentality. I would give it a like, but apparently, I’ve reached my daily limit of likes because I haven’t earned a higher trust level. Yep. That’s sure to keep me engaged on the forums.
Anyway.
The problem feels different than just in-universe mentality to me. There was some description of something (I’m sure it was the helltides) that made it seem like survival in Sanctuary is less a state of mind and more a state of physical impossibility.
That may be why they arent suicidal, but no way could their population survive. They get killed off the second they set foot out of town. Trade would be impossible between settlements. The death rate FAR exceeds the birth rate.
Yes. By the way, I wonder why some opposing factions work together. For example, often religious fanatics stand next to bandits and demons. They only attack the player. I thought they were enemies.
