Anybody else having serious crashes when launching... has anyone had any luck running the game in some kind of protected mode?

Yesterday, I tried Ray Tracing, it was okay, tested it by going back to RT Off and quit. Tried playing it again today and had a hard crash (D4 crashes HARD on my system). We’re talking all fans on full, screens black, system completely unresponsive (even had to do a Windows reinstall, WiFi no longer works). Every subsequent time I try to run the game, it crashes the exact same way. The second time I tried, there was a very quick “update” to the game, but it still crashed. I’ve Scan and Repaired the game twice now, with no success.

Next step is to uninstall and reinstall.

I’m running a Ryzen 7 38000X, 2080TI Founder’s Edition, 32GB ram… every driver updated.

I’m curious if anyone has had any luck running the game in such a way that a crash won’t bring down the entire system?

EDIT TO ADD:
I’m running an AMD Ryzen 7 3800X, 32GB RAM, lots of NVME and SSD space, Nvidia 2080tiFE. Running at 4K res (2 4K monitors on my system). Was running great (lvl 95 this season with limited playtime) up until the other day and it wouldn’t get past the black and green doors, just black screened with 100% fans running.

All of my drivers were up to date, no changes to my system, all other games run great with no issues. I even re-installed Windows, checked Diablo IV files, reinstalled Diablo IV, at which point it ran for about 10 minutes and black screened again. Wouldn’t run past the black and green loading doors again after that. CPU was at 42C and GPU was 58C at time of crashes, so not overheating. I did a complete memcheck and my RAM is fine, checked HDs, and they are fine, as well. Checked all Windows files, checked out fine, as well.

The tail end of my last (crashing) FenrisDebug.txt is:

More notes:
I’ve now pretty much exhausted all efforts to make the game playable. I’ve reinstalled EVERYTHING with the game crashing the moment it gets past the “starting game” screen.

SSD or HD for storage?

Sounds like it could be a corrupted file for your settings. You may have to find that file and delete it or this problem will persist beyond an uninstall. Assuming that’s the problem of course.

Assuming you’re using windows this is located under:

C:\Users\ (Username) \Documents\Diablo IV

(I have no idea about consoles sorry)

What you’re looking for is the LocalPrefs.txt file, try removing that and starting up the game, see if that works for you. If it doesn’t, try the Scan & Repair options from the Bnet launcher, and if that doesn’t work, then uninstall/reinstall. Assuming none of that works, I may have a registry solution for you, but that’s a last resort, would rather not have people going into the registry if I can help it.

Keep in mind removing this file will remove all your local settings, so basically it resets all your settings back to default.

I have blue screened in the past when running this game in 4K, like first month after launch. But never had to reinstall windows or the game.

Try what Iggi said, especially if you were playing without issue before yesterday’s crash.

Try a Windows System Restore.

Mine was running just fine until the RT patch and now it is laggy as hell…And no I do NOT have RT enabled even though I have an EVGA rtx3090 FTW3 with 24gb of memory.

SSD for storage… my root system drive is a 1TB NVME, and the game folder is on a 2TB SSD…
