Any tips on killing The Butcher as a ranged?

Everytime I come across him solo hes just in my face and I cannot get range on him, if I am in a group with friends no problem we can get him but as a solo ranged player its not possible. Is there any trick to beating him as ranged without ?

Find a shrine or some stairs to terrain exploit him all i can tell you. I can handle him if he 101 or lower but anything higher he just rips me. But am iceshards not exactly the best boss spec.

i have to play ring around the pillar with him too. If you get away he chain pulls you unless you can dodge that move and teleport away quick.

I guess if you can dodge a wrench, you can dodge a butcher!

Kite when shields are on cooldown, use movement abilities to dodge him. Basically find ways to stall out the fight while you wait for barriers.

(on sorc you can rotate ice barrier + barrier aspect and even more so if you use deep freeze + teleport to stall even more)

I am playing a ranged shadow rogue - so far my score on him is 1-1-1 (one win, one loss and one poof). I have found that it partly depends on some luck with where he appears. The time I killed him, he appeared in a large room with lots of pillars I could duck behind. With pillars you can run him into them. It takes a few moments for him to recover after a couple of attacks. This is your opening to attack him.

what is your exact build? Do you have problems with Final Bosses?

Why am I asking? So, that I can come up with a more concrete plan.

The Butcher does have a Stagger Mechanic. So, applying stun, etc. will leave him wide open. However, you have to have stun, etc. to begin with.

General strategy, find long areas with alcoves, etc. to conceal in. Go to alcove, fire until he gets close, use Evade to get away and go to next alcove. Repeat process. This will be one of the most grindy things you have done in awhile. There are reports of it taking 15 minutes to down The Butcher this way.

On my sorcerer I didn’t have the defensive stats to tank any hits initially. Later, I swapped resistance gems for armor (which seems across all gameplay way more productive).

When I beat him it was a case of maintaining range with teleport/dodging taking a few shots; using my ultimate when available; using terrain to defeat his chain and/to open range. When my shield was off cooldown I would tank a few hits to dump mana into him and then teleport away; wash, rinse, repeat. It’s a death by a thousand cuts type of scenario.

He does get fairly predictable on his charge, chain pull when you get to far, shout to slow you. Just focus on surviving; don’t get overzealous; and you will get him.

I will try that next time, not sure I can take his melee hits though.

This may be the only time a necromancer with minions has an easier time in the game than other classes. The strategy is to find a pillar and run around the pillar for 10 minutes until your minions kill the butcher.

I, too, employed the Tom & Jerry tactic of running around an obstacle for 10 minutes.

Well I tried the face tank method and that failed , I used all 9 of my potions but only got him maybe just below half health. I’m a squishy level 60 Pen rogue atm. I’ve not been lucky with drops to go to any other spec that might make it easier.

I would love to help, but I’m a werewolf and love standing toe to toe with The Butcher. Sometimes, I’ll be doing a dungeon and just start saying, “heeeere butcher butcher butcher…come out and play.”

There’s something really satisfying about standing toe to toe with him and knocking the everlovin’ snot out of him. And, also, no joke, when I use my ultimate ability he actually runs away EVERY time. Seriously, lol. :smiling_imp:

The Butcher: “FRESH MEAT!!!”

Me: “Let’s go, @#$%^!!!”

The Butcher: “…wait, what?”

Werewolf: 8
The Butcher: 0

I have lots of defensives that make my guy near impossible to kill. I suppose a rogue could use some of those things. Like I have an aspect that gives me a 2500 dps bubble every 30 seconds against elites, another that gives me like 17% damage reduction while a werewolf, another that gives me more armor every time I attack up to 30% more, some paragon stuff that gives me damage reduction to close enemies, damage reduction from and more damage to poisoned enemies, unbreakable for 4 secs if I take damage while cc’d, and a Druid boon that reduces elite damage to me by 10%. There’s probably some other stuff, like in my build I have base 15% resist all and 15% damage reduction every time I use a defensive skill and I use Blood Howl all the time. I also have lots of Thorns, probably over 1000, I think. So, The Butcher, basically does no damage while I kill him. :sunglasses:

Oh, I also heal 3% of my health when I crit and I crit all the time. I think that’s a Druid boon, too.

I also stack armor gems on my jewelry. I don’t know what it is up to now - 220 armor per gem, or maybe 150? It’s way better than the resist all I was using previously.

I just got The Butcher during my class run for Sorc. I did the stupid approach. I went toe 2 toe. Fire Shield/Ice Armor combo did what it was supposed to do - damage him when he hit me and prevent his hits from damaging me. Back up just out of melee range and hit him with Incinerate. However, it prevented me from seeing his hook. That was not fun. Frost Nova did click off part of the Stagger meter but…

Anyway, need to refine my tactics. Got him just above 1 bar down before he got me.

Tri-build Sorc 0
The Butcher 1

Stack armor, face tank him. Dodge his stun melee attack.

Running away from the butcher is how you die. Just get armor and close % damage reduction. He’ll never kill you.

If you’re not face tanking him regardless of world tier or the level of the NM dungeon your build is not properly min-maxxed. Period

The butcher is broken
On melee builds he sounds fairly trivial, but for ranged builds you have to exploit terrain bugs and stuff to beat him.

All the children will come out and yell about getting good, or “it’s a skill problem”, who are playing whatever fotm barb build they got off their favorite internet site not understanding they don’t have any skill, when they are just playing a build someone else gave them.

The fact is, if you have to “cheat” to beat a regular part of the game, it is broken.

As a ranged necro I found the trick to be…stay close then when he is about to attack evade through him. Repeat back and forth. Then when barrier pops. Poor the DP’s on.
