Another patch? 4+GB

Got hit with another patch this morning 4+ GB. Really Blizz, what next PoD (Patch of the Day)?

They need to reverse it! Screwed up my controller input on PC.

Not uncommon for a couple weeks after a launch, for any game/studio.

Lol 4GB not uncommon…you smoking hard

I was talking about patching.

But as for the patch size, It’s not like it’s a 4GB for 1GB game. D4 is quite large.

Since no one knows what’s in it, no one can make any claims to the size’s appropriateness. Unless they are smoking hard… however that applies to this.

So much for all the internal testing, public testing and Q&A.

You screwed up on day 1, delaying the launch by hours after most people pre-downloaded the expansion, and now another 4 GB patch. Seriously, I question the company’s competence to roll out a SINGLE act expansion.

D4 is only “quite large” if you download the additional high res texture packs.

A 4 gig patch is like 10% of the game’s actual size.

Right, so quite small comparitively.

For all we know the fixes are inside massive files, so to patch the game those new massive files need to replace the old ones.

It’s not like all patches add their size to the overall size. The majority of those GBs are replacing what’s already installed. So the overall size doesn’t change much.

Robocop had a 35gb patch for me like a week ago, it’s a 40gb game. Dead by Daylight had an 8gb patch recently, it’s a 45gb game.

It is impossible to completely test a game with a very large online population without that population. There are many uncontrolled variables in terms of the players computers and internet connections than what can be addressed in a normal beta test.

Sure, but ideally a proper patching system would only replace the actual file being updated, and not it’s entire archived parent file. It might require more processes to extract / insert files that way, but having these giant file systems was always problematic design choices to begin with.

Most updates should be barely a few mb in data over the internet … instead of redownloading large portions of the game to save some dev time of initial setup. We still act like we’re in a world of unlimited high speed internet and time with 4k computers … from a company that had a very problematic release day that shows counter to that.

In the surface layer, a 10% patch seems like a ton of things broken. Under the hood, 4 gigs of changes is whack. It’s also a lot of money changing hands when you start talking about a million people moving all that data around on servers. Definitely not something that should be a regular thing, even if some people view it as an inconsequential irritation.

That’s what I was saying. Not every file is in an archive. And binaries aren’t something that easily allows changes to its internal parts. For example, see here and here (just the applicable parts).

Which circles back around to no one knowing what’s in any patch, so no one can really claim anything about the sizes they should be.

I swear some of you spend more time sitting around thinking things up to cry about than actually playing the game.

nevermind that, WHERE are the patch notes for it?

Another day, another patch. Hey Bli$$, you know I was joking about the PoD, right?
