ok let’s look at it objectively.

The Good:

  • The classes outside of SB are as closely balanced to each other as they have been since i started in S3
  • The amount of end-game activities is nearly doubled
  • They have made leveling challenging but not impossible and have given the player the freedom and control to level in different tiers to adjust difficulty to their desire/build
  • They have provided tiered endgame so people who don’t want to grind Paragon 250+ of get all 2GA+ gear with good tempers and masterwork don’t have to (they just have to accept that less investment = less payout)
  • Builds that you simply could not play in torment in S5 CAN be played in endgame if you have decent gear and stick to lower tiers
  • People who do want to max out their characters can still experience a challenge in the pit even with ā€œPerfectā€ build and gear
  • The new zone, dungeons and legions really feel new and different
  • SB (ignoring the op bugs for a min… don’t worry we’ll get to that) is by far the most versatile, dynamic and exciting class in the game
  • They have started work on balancing builds within classes (yes a rocky start but it has started)

The Bad:

Spiritborn - Yes a new class should be strong, and people expect that. This situation goes beyond that. they clearly fumbled here. I do believe they made the right call not to nerf it midseason. it needed to be out of the gate or next season (especially after having to address evade eagle)

Bugs and Exploits - m C’mon people are really bothered by this and rightly so. Tell us you are going to do something!

Economy - you think Real world inflation is bad ? HA!

The Ugly:

So many people are so wound up about the bad they either can’t see or are ignoring the good. Let’s be honest assessors here and acknowledge that there is progress and there are problems.

Some things were clearly decided on the fly and were reactions to lessons learned. I prefer this to them ignoring issues with core systems that would make longer term tuning difficult or impossible, but not everyone sees this from a software developers’ perspective I get that. I personally give them mad credit for saying ā€œGuys this system isn’t going to work long term we need to rip it up and redo itā€

I don’t completely hate the game,I just feel that given the time line(even if they start season content 6 months in advance)it will never be properly tested, and without a long ptr people will never get the chance to give an opinion on the seasonal content. This is the problem with Live service.

I work on designing and improving in-house software for my organization. Our philosophy is, ā€œIf it’s not broken, don’t fix it.ā€ Instead, we focus on adding user-friendly features to make everyone’s job more efficient. I wouldn’t mind Blizzard overhauling the base game if it truly benefits the long run, but given their track record of frequent bugs, I’d be hesitant to make such changes until they address their internal issues first.

This guy needs fired immediately.

Agree with if it ain’t broke … but it was apparent that some of the core systems were a huge roadblock to tuning balance. they saw this needed adjusted an pulled the cord…

I could liken it to the military saying that ā€œno battle plan survives first contactā€, or Gary Kasparov saying the ā€œbest strategy is to make the best move every turnā€ and not to get tunnel visioned into a specific set of moves etc.

I mean clearly you want to have a plan, but to not be able to adjust it in progress is not much better than not having one

I might sound bitter this season, but I know Blizzard will eventually turn it around. I give credit where it’s due and offer criticism where it’s deserved. What frustrates me is constantly hearing, ā€œWe’ll fix it next season.ā€ Some of these issues are from the current season. Why can’t they make adjustments right away and let players test them out? Then, if needed, they can fine-tune things in the next season. I am not just talking about this season. It has been a few seasons in a roll.

i can’t say i am entirely satisfied either. I’m just tired of reading endless posts from haters who can’t acknowledge any of the good and often appear to have no idea what they are actually talking about. Not to suggest that you or your posts fit this, but I think given your most recent post you know what i mean.

Im I the only one that agrees with most of what Rod said, at least the part about game design philosophy . I don’t agree that S6 is in a good place. But he probably cannot bash on the game negativity even though there might be some as the GM of D4.

All things considered, I do agree with mostly what Rod says. Maybe that explains why the game has been generally evolving in a direction that aligns with my taste ? LOL

I absolutely hated S0 and S1 and the time line matches up as to when the team decided to change gear and realize fun is more important than pure balancing.

Balance is a big part of the fun, more diversity more thing you can do.

So they realized that, but they didnt do too good with it. Now we have no fun and no balancing…

I am genuinely confused by your comment lmao

Agreed. We have three months between seasons, they could easily give us some of these updates now on the live server, squish out any potential bugs, and keep working on S7. Instead they’ll wait it out, bugs and all, even after the PTR and we’re right back to where we started.

Patch hits, bug fixes for two weeks, radio silence, mid-season patch campfire, mid-season patch, radio silence, next season dev update, 1 or 2 weeks later patch hits.

All of the smaller changes could be added into a three quarters-season patch or whatever. Give people a reason to log back on and not wait until the next season.

I think they missed the mark but the idea is correct. You do want fun over pure balance. I agree the execution was not perfect on that idea though.

You really need both to pull it off.

That line is an excuse for the nonsense they regularly pull, like conveniently omitting nerfs from the patch notes or not fixing bugs. They’re still scared of the idea of a ā€œnerfā€, so they pull these little tricks all of the time.

One look at any of the major patch notes and you’ll see they very much still ā€œtryā€ to balance the game. They still very much intentionally shift the meta through patch note adjustments. They certainly aren’t handing out ancestrals, mythics, 4GA or triple masterwork crits in the name of fun, either.

I just want the obdi farm (mats cost an gold) to be less time intensive, atm it’s the only real issue blocking max fun.

Yes, I’m a grumpy old man this season because the Rogue class isn’t in a good place right now. I can finally understand how Barbs have been feeling. :joy:

We should be expecting more as Blizzard is a multi-billion dollar company. If you think the content of the DLC is enough to justify the $40 price tag and it needs a team to do it for more than 1.5 years, you should check out POE and that’s probably their one season content.

I am already not talking about all the bugs with this DLC. Duping exists back to S0 and after 6 seasons it’s still not fixed and they barely ā€œfixedā€ by banning people.
Balancing is horrible. Even without all the unintentional bug, SB is still 100 times more damage than other 5 classes.

Your comment just simply ignore how bad this DLC is. I can copy and paste your comment to every single game no matter how bad they are.
