Finally got an ancestral worth using yesterday, the downside was, the GA was the stat I couldn’t use. So I got some decent tempers, rolled off the GA, masterworked it to 12, and being ilevel 800 with 4 more MW levels than a legendary, it turned out to be substantially more powerful than the 8/8 750 I had.
Point is, while I’m not keen on ancestral rarity, make sure you’re not so hung up on GAs that you overlook an actual upgrade.
The problem here unfortunately is that for me it does happen most time not only one, but two affixes are useless. 
The “best” affix so far on an Ancestral by the way was +7 HP every 5s - on iL800! 
yep I did the same, its a good stepping stone to later gear, unlocking 12/12 in each slot is really powerful when you are not playing FOTM builds or spirit born. This method got me into T4 where I could farm actually good ancestrals.
Oh yeah definitely going to happen more often than not…I just think a lot of us might have that pre 2.0 mindset where bad GA = instant salvage, but it’s worth taking an extra second now.
