Alt+Tabbing causes massive pc slowdown

As the subject says, whenever I alt-tab while using Windowed(Fullscreen) causes a MASSIVE slowdown on my computer. I usually have a youtube video on my second monitor, so when I alt+tab to pause or rewind, everything (including my mic becoming a robotic mess) begins to slow down massively. This also causes some visual artifacts specifically in the area that the youtube video is running in, most often vertical green lines with glitched areas surrounding them. I’m running a Ryzen 7 5800x3d, an RTX4070, and 32gb of ram, so it’s not like I don’t have the ability to run and alt+tab. When I change the game to be Windowed (not borderless windowed), I can then click outside of the window and it won’t lag, yet alt+tabbing to leave the window DOES still lag my computer (While on windowed Fullscreen I can move my mouse to click out of the screen, but it still lags). Any ideas as to why this happens? It’s only on this game that I get this issue. I have fully updated graphics drivers

Bumbing, as I also have this issue

I have a Ryzen 7 3700x, RTX 3080, and 32gb of ram.
Main monitor is 1440p 165hz while my 2nd is a 1080p 60hz
Alt tabbing or even clicking to my 2nd monitor causes my PC to stutter badly.
Only game that this happens to.

I also have this, i got it randomly today while my pc was not being used and i came back to play, started d4 and i got these insane stutters/laggish mouse kind of things, i had to swap the background FPS to fix it … this game is a freaking beta, #joke

Hello,

I too am having this issue. I have the game on fullscreen bordeless or whatever isnt the windowed mode. Everytime I click out of the game and onto my 2nd or third monitor everything slows down tremendously and sometimes even causes my PC to crash or freeze. I do have my settings on high but even when i downgrade to medium it still happens as I have tried to see if that was the issue. I don’t believe it is my hardware as I am running with a Ryzen 9 5900x, a Geforce 3070, 64 gb of RAM and my motherboard is pretty decent as well. Has anyone figured out if there was a fix for this???

Bumping this again, having the exact same problem. RTX 3070. Happens on latest and previous drivers. Completely slows down the whole computer, webcam drops to 2-3 frames per minute and cant watch youtube videos on second screen.

Same issue for me, not found a fix yet.

I have the same issues. If I alt tab out of the game, everything else on my computer is slow and laggy. Also when I exit the game by pressing escape and Leave Diablo 4, the game freezes and takes a while to shutdown.

Same issue here, no fix yet. +1

Kind of disgusting how this is still causing issues I mean what kind of game causes computers to literally lag when tabbing out I have hundreds of games played over the years and this is the only one that does it

Happens for me too with a 3070ti /12700k, doesnt for my son with a 3050 and a 10700 or something like that. Its annoying. I tried launching in battle.net as an admin and it seems not to stutter so much off the game, but the game itself in the background stutters.

I’ve had this crash my game two or three times now too. So bump

Patch 1.1 and still having this issue. Both of my foreground and background FPS limits are the same. Doesn’t seem to happen if I mouse over to my other monitor and scroll through the current webpage I’m on, but if I click anywhere my game freaks out. It also freezes up my computer when exiting the game.

The only thing ive found to help with this issue is, in the graphics settings there is a slider for Max Foreground FPS and Max Background FPS. I slid the Max Background FPS up to 100fps to start and it seems to cut down on the massive breakdown in the game.

Same thing for me. It is not a CPU issue. It is a Blizzard issue.

Just bump this problem up. It is terrible i can not play with this problem.

So I think I found the fix for this since I was also having this issue.

Options > Graphics > Max Background FPS.
Increase this to at least 60(or whatever you prefer above this).

I think default is 8 FPS and causing all my other windows to run at the same FPS the game background FPS was running at when alt tabbing or moving to a second monitor. Adjusting this to 60 FPS helped and made the issue go away.

My specs
Windows 11
CPU - AMD RYZEN 7 7800X3D
GPU - RTX 4080 Super
Motherboard - B650E-I
RAM - DDR5 RAM 32GB (2x16GB) 6000MT/s CL30-38-38-96

I never had this problem.
My settings are like that:

  • Limit Cutscene FPS : OFF
  • Max Foreground FPS: 400 (i dont want any limit)
  • Max Background FPS: 60
