Hi all, why doesn’t Blizzard allow add-ons for Diablo, but does for WOW?
Who cares, play the game they made or shush
They’re gonna have expansions and stuff down the road.
It is not something they have seen used in most diablo games because they are the typical ARPG game. This is kind of a MMO and kind of a ARPG so its kind of new territory when it comes to addons that you would see in most typical MMO games.
This might be something they add in the future if there is the need for them but currently they are focused on giving the player the most immersive gameplay possible. This means ingame overlay, addons like loot filters, etc probably will not make it into the game till we scream loud enough for them to hear.
Kind of like we did for the complete destruction of necro with patch that we seen in the server slam. They immediately reversed a decision on back end and made it somewhat better. Hoping for them to balance it even more before release myself.
Clearly he cares and he is somebody. No need to be rude to others man.
And? He should have used google, or you know…asked Blizzard
He just did, this is a Blizzard forum on the said game of said question he asked.
Oh when was the last time they answered a question?
Irrelevant to being completely rude to an individual asking a question about the game. Also they do in fact answer questions on their forums they just dont answer ever single one no game company does.
I think they basically got grandfathered in for WoW. I wouldn’t expect mods to be available in any future game of Blizzard either.
I guess in short, that’s how the game was made / designed.
WoW was designed with Lua (programming language WoW supports where you can use to write addons ) being available and an API (think of this like a server in a restaurant- the means of communicating between a kitchen and customer, or in this case, an addon and a game) being available from the start or at least extremely early into its existence.
Diablo and D4 hasn’t been, aside from D2R for single player modding, and I believe this API was built separately just for single player modding. I would expect addons to be allowed at any point
Could it happen? Sure. Will it happen? Doubtful. Is it supported today? No.
To be fair, a LOT of the amazing quality of life changes / UI improvements Blizzard has put into WoW have been stolen from user-made addons. There used to be addons to tell you what things vendor for for example, because the game wouldn’t unless you visited a vendor, and this was later added to the game. Before this, when your bags were full, it was difficult to know what to hold onto and what to remove from your bags without memorizing or looking things up. There are hundreds of instances like this
The community has the power to make these games significantly more enjoyable than they are. Look at WC3 Reforged. It didn’t have a ladder for the longest time until a player made one for everyone to enjoy
Do some addons take away from the fun of the game? Yes, I think so. But, addons in general, or just player-made apps have improved WoW drastically and inspired a lot of official changes that were for the better
It’s also the player that decides to take away some of the immersion in favor of useful add-ons
Addons should never be allowed.
Personally, I’d hate to have to play diablo with addons.
WoW is almost unplayable without addons because of how useful they are. But a downside is that they take away from gameplay because you play however the addons dictate and you don’t really make meaningful decisions anymore. Even in pvp…
Players have had too free rein with addons for wow and maximised the fun out of it. Weakauras being the most eregrious example of something that should have been instantly forbidden.
“Given to opportunity, players will optimize the fun out of the game”.
The devs have to be extremely careful with the way they design the game. If they are to allow addons, I really hope they do not allow addons like DBM or any of the pvp related addons (for example, there was an addon that showcased enemies important cooldowns - so you knew exactly when to use your cc or not).
Diablo needs no addons whatsoever.
Thing is either the devs can provide features that players want like overlay, or fight 3rd party program makers like TurboHUD for Diablo 3. Which one do you think has more developers working on their projects?
I can bet you there is 100 developers for 3rd party tools such as overlays to the 1 developer fighting to get rid of these said programs. They take 1 down (example: Glider) and 10 more pop up. Its a battle they cant win and wouldnt have to win if they just allowed addons & or features that players want to make their gaming experience more fun.
Imagine a loot filter addon in Diablo 4 that would allow me to quickly identify gear with specific stats I want for my specific build. No more sorting through page after page of loot drops. This will be a 3rd party tool within month or less of D4 release because people dont like to sort through a bunch of crap gear time and time again to only find 1 item that has any use to their build with a minimal gain.
Same with an overlay, every major streamer has already voiced their opinion about no overlay being 1 of the dumbest moves in D4. Having to tab to pull up a huge map every time you want to go somewhere or make sure you are going the right way ruins the immersion than having a overlay that accomplishes the same thing without the need to tab/tab/tab/tab/tab o where am i going again tab/tab/tab/tab/tab/tab crap ran down a dead end tab/tab/tab/tab.

Just being a jerk for the sake of being a jerk? If you don’t have anything to bring to topic… grow up and move to another topic.
Could be due to the level of complexity in the games? I don’t really have a great answer for this one… they could just dislike addons but accepts that WOW has em, because addons have been around since the early days.
Man I cannot stand ignorant people like this. These type of people are 100% incapable of ever having a conversation, due to their own ignorance.
If you would like to participate in conversations or debates, at least make an attempt to take a look at both sides of the argument no matter how far you are to one side of that argument. Do some people want addons? Yes. Do some people not want addons? Yes.
To completely dismiss one side, is completely 100% ignorant on your part because CLEARLY both sides exist and to act as if they don’t purely because of your stubbornness, makes no sense. One day some of you will learn that when you can actually make an attempt to look at where others are coming from, regardless of your views, you will actually become a better person.
Diablo IV as it stands right now isn’t balanced around add-ons or the use of 3rd party apps. WoW was eventually balanced around the availability and use of add-ons but it was a gradual process, and of course add-ons evolve as well.
I’d personally rather avoid the use of add-ons altogether just to avoid balance nightmares or certain add-ons becoming mandatory just because of how powerful or widely used they are.
