As a software engineer and a pirate myself, I find this 100% unconvincing. Even if it was true, you could separate online and offline characters to be permanently one or the other. Theres a dozen ways to solve this besides throwing your hands up in the air.
Just because its a trend doesnt mean its good. Trends fall out of style because people eventually realize how stupid they are and find a better way of doing things.
