I did some quick math on what would be the time investment each season to max renown given what is carried over. I could see them doing a full reset for season one but I do not think that in the long run, they should continue to reset it each season.
Carried over under the current plan:
380 for full exploration
Where you end up on the renowned track:
680 carried over
-500 total for tier 1 and 2
180 Renown into T3
Easy Renown Grabs:
300 Strong Holds
+120 Remaining waypoints
420 Renown Total
Math for renown needed to get to max after carryover and easy grabs:
1320 Remaining Renown to get
-420 From strong points and waypoints
900 to max renown
Math on time to complete one task:
Dungeons:
900/30 = 30 Dungeons
15 mins a piece = 450 mins or 7.5 hours
Side Quests:
900/20 = 45 Side Quests
At a generous 5 min average = 225 mins or 3.75 hours
Now average out to an even split between the two since there are not that many dungeons or sidequests per region and you end up with 5.625 hours per zone.
Total Time to Max:
5.625 hours per zone assuming they all take as long as Fractured Peaks
5 Regions
28.125 hours to max out renown
This does not include any time that people spend doing Strongholds, running to dungeons, or collecting out-of-the-way waypoints. I know some classes may be able to run them faster but that was my average when in a leveling loadout. If you wait to a higher level once you get your gear rolling it can come down to 7-10 mins per dungeon but I think due to the various layouts a higher average is a fair estimation.
I can see this being needed to be completed in season 1, but I think going into season 2 and beyond if you have already done this in a season it should carry forward. Or another alternative is to switch the rewards on tier 4 and tier 5. This would shave off a lot of time to get the paragon points and the Obol increases could be worked on over time. I just wanted to put the math out there so people know what we are looking at in July.

Your math is terrible and it’s not going to take 30 hours unless you’re standing around chatting for most of that.
Plus, there are many side-quests that have you complete a dungeon at the same time.

That is why I averaged them out… the math is for Fractured Peaks. Later zones take even longer as their quests are more spread out and there are less dungeon quests.

If you don’t like it, don’t play seasons.
Idiots are making mountains out of mole hills. D4 seasons are basically just like D3 seasons.
- its always a fresh start every season
- it’s separate from your non-season characters/progression/renown just like today with Hardcore and non-Hardcore modes
- it’s optional
Did I forget to mention
OPTIONAL?
How is the concept of seasons so massively misunderstood when its been part of the gaming Diablo community for years and years?

Scosglen is 350+340+20 carried over.
Leaves 7 easy waypoints + 3 strongholds for 440. Total 1150. This should take not even an hour which is easy xp while leveling.
There are a lot of sidequest in the druid area, which is a stronghold+quests+at least 2 dungeon.
On my druid I have 2070 renown. Only 10 dungeons done and 31/47 side quests.
Map is already explored. No more searching for altars. Might take 3-4 hours for peak/scosglen. Depending on your class you do some dungeon for aspects anyway. And a lot of side quests give decent exp.
So 50 less than the 900 remaining for fractured peaks… Which is what the math shows. After the waypoints and strongholds. Not before. There is no time included for those. I was pretty generous with the time per task since that is the best case in good gear and running optimally.
I love doing sidequests and I’m happy Blizzard wants to reward me for doing them.
Don’t understand why blizzard should listen to rude people who want to take the fun from me.

you’ll do a lot of that leveling

Not really, first playthrough maybe, but in the season it’s going to be beeline MSQ and come back for the rest as it is by far the best XP and faster to do side content once you have the horse. If you have already seen all of the side quest content then it is a waste of time to do it while leveling. I get some people will want to take their time but they don’t value it the same as people looking to be efficient through content they have already done.

you won’t be doing campaign in seasons unless you want, you’ll be doing dungeons/side quest for level/renown/codex
Your math is correct. It will be roughly 30 hours to do this. Which is straight up unacceptable. The renown grind right now is about 50 hours. 30 hours is awful, I went as fast as I could and the final two tiers in each zone took a combined 15-20 hours.

The whole “Different Realm” thing + progress resets is nothing for me.
They have yet to confirm that. There has been no mention if the campaign skip button will work in the season, and that is still by far much slower xp gains if you are not just doing the dungeon reset grind.
Renown is a terrible system for seasonal play. It should be scrapped entirely for seasons.

They have during livestreams, just the last one they did they mentioned it again. Going into seasons you will still have campaign skip, horse, lilith statue and exploration.
And it’s not all about XP, efficiency is also making sure you’re getting the most out of your time spent, which leveling while getting codex/renown done is the most efficient
30 hours for all complete Renown is too much time for casuals. Even if blizzard drops down to 10 hours, casuals will still complain about the time investments.

Welcome to the arpg genre WoW traveller. Please check your MMO misconceptions and baggage at the door. You will also be getting other buffs in seasons and you have no clue what Blizzard is configuring for other ways to earn renown. So sit back, relax, and enjoy the fresh journey. Oh btw, did you happened to read about all the upcoming changes that are going to speed up your journey.

Maybe it is geting to the point where we are tired of the same old thing? There is no rule saying seasons have to be a full reset. There is no reason seasons can’t have you start where you left off, if anything it would be a huge win. Worst case it doesn’t work out and we go back to the same crap. But you cannot succeed if you don’t try. There is nothing to lose.
Diablo 4 would still be an ARPG without seasonal resets.
ARPG refers to the isometric action-based combat in the game, not the seasonal resets.
