As the Diablo GM Rod Fergusson revealed the next expansion for D4 will be released in 2026, I wanted to discuss ideas for what you guys think they have in store for us.
I’ll go first and this is pure speculation, but think they will bring back Diablo and introduce the paladin as it fits the lore of Khanduras. The paladin from D2 was a holy knight from Westmarch. I also think it would be cool to see the trading port “Jewel of the Desert,” Lut Gholein, make a return as a capital city. I would also like to see the first hub area in D3, New Tristram.
I also think a major feature would be Clan Halls. Clan Halls would be instanced areas for your clan mates. This would give players a place to unwind in-game, socialize with other clan mates, and give you a place to call home in the world of Sanctuary.
2nd Expansion
- Expansion Name: TBD
- New Class: Paladin/Crusader
- Holy knight from Westmarch
- New Zone: Khanduras
- New Towns:
- Lut Gholein (capital city, from D2)
- New Tristram (town, from D3)
- Major Feature: Clan Halls
- Clan Vault (donate gold)
- Clan Stash (shared stash)
- Clan Heraldry (manage banners)
- Training Grounds
- Message Board
- Vendors
- Wardrobe
- Armory
- Furnishings (purchased in shop)
Ok, now its your turn. What do you guys think they will add for the second expansion?
We’ll get a small update dumping Mephisto in one of the unused map sections in about half a year, then the expansion will be Diablo, after the honeymoon period Blizzard will wash their hands of this game and put into maintenance. D5 will follow about 5-6 years later and will initially center around an Angel, then Baal, then Diablo, but I won’t care by then anyway.
I think at this point they won’t use the other continent in D4 since they won’t fill it in (that will be D5) so the next expansion will be like Xiansai or Skovos because whatever the heck nowadays.

That’s pretty much exactly what I’d expect.

they will add the ability for you to prepurchase it now for $200 dollars and it will include a useless cosmetic that you unlock today so you cant refund the xpac when it comes out

I still think they were going to milk us with expansions that add little content like… Xiansai as a new zone. Revamp of helltides as the big expansion change, with a new timed dungeon mechanics. No new class, but they’ll add it as a DLC at some point when sales are low.
We’ll get the “end” to the Mephisto storyline before the next expansion (or at least the follow-up), but I really doubt we would see Diablo right there unless their initial “annual” Expansion plan was Marketing BS to draw player’s attention towards the game. He could finally appear in the second expansion, but will we beat him, or will it wait for a third expansion?
Considering the required dev time, if they planned a third expansion, they wrote the second expansion story accordingly already, and it’s probably in the works.
I’m pretty sure that the expansions sell relatively well, at least compared to Battle passes, even if they require way more work. At this point, they’ll reuse assets if they can, new textures/colors, maybe a few new enemy types and at least throw us two other low effort expansions and call it a day.
forces you to buy it or you cant actually equip any gear similar to the way the added runes that allow you to make mythics (even though you could make a mythic you wanted before runes were added and before the voh xpac) but removed that ability uniless you bought the voh xpac…
or maybe they will let you only let you teleport if you buy the new xpac and just force everyone that didnt buy the latest one to manually walk over to whatever zone they want to go to…

I already mentioned it in another thread, but here’s my “tinfoil hat” theory for Expansion 2:
It won’t continue the VoH story directly (that one was left in a situation that would believably stay somewhat stable), instead it goes somewhere else, maybe following Lorath.
I think it was said that he went looking for Tyrael or something, so that might be where we go next (both Lorath at the end of base campaign and Ormus after VoH told us to “go gather allies”, after all).
Then, when expo 3 is gonna come out, they make VoH included with the base game
- that way, the Exp3 story can continue form VoH, and even require having completed that campaign, without having to worry about what hapens with players who one and not the other
- This isn’t as far-fetched as it might apear at first; WoW does it this way, for example (also SC2 -the only other Blizzard game to have gotten 2 expansions- made WoL free when the Nova DLC released IIRC)
Then they add Exp2 to the base game and continue its story in Exp4, etc.
Basically having 2 “main storylines” that take turns to progress.
… Or they scrap the second expo, like thy did with D2 and D3
Mephisto will be the main villain still. The cliffhanger at the end of VOH clearly showed that. The campaign will be him manipulating everyone as a false Akarat reincarnation. But only we, the heroes! Are smart enough to see it. I believe we are going to see a lot of expansions before the game is “complete”.
I do hope the 2nd expansion provides more content than VOH especially considering the amount of time between release dates. People spoke of VOH the same as if it was just the start of a new season.
If it is an expansion, make it feel like one. Not just a another seasonal start.
Willy Wonka and the chocolate factory
New class: Chocolate Blaster
uses chocolate magic
new zone: The Factory
Whole zone is candy monsters hired by Diablo to give us all diabetes.
New paragon boards, 1 each, each themed after a candy flavor!
New endgame content: 2d sidescroller where we fight demon bosses inspired by Cuphead that rewards Uber affixed items with a special chocolate affix.

I like your expectations, but I doubt we’ll see Diablo anytime soon, not before we defeat Mephisto, i.e., we finish the story in progress, which will likely take the second expansion to complete.
Diablo will require a whole new story arc, likely lasting a couple of expansions by the look of things. Then we’ll have a couple more expansions dedicated to Baal, and finally the game will slowly die off and leave room for D5 (in 6-7 years from now
).
I really hope I have seen the last of Neyrelle she is now free of Mephisto’s influence. I do not want to be her follower anymore. She can go play house with that useless bag of bones Prava. Bring Covetous Shen back.

You’re thinking of Belial. Lol.
Someone save this post for the expansion.
New class will be blood Knight pretty much the exact same one as diablo immortal.
The exp will follow the last part of Rarthma profecy ( the weird stuff that shows in your screen in both base and VOH prologues). Acording to that, we will have a ‘false prophet arc’ followed by the return of Lilith with the end of Mephisto.
The last part of the prophecy is very clear and once Mephisto is gone, both TERROR and DESTRUCTION will show up. So this bunch of low IQ ppl here cant stop complainin about no diablo in a diablo game.
Based on the first expac.
A new, never before seen class that is massively OP to make everyone play it so we have statistics to show it is a huge success. This will accompany nerfs to all other classes to reinforce this.
A new region where all events or anything you need to progress will happen in this area exclusively. This will also proved the statistic that shows the new region is a hit with players.
The continuation of the story will be underwhelming and a huge disappointment. But since we have to complete it to get anything useful it will also be a statistical success.
RMT, duping and senseless grinds for mats will only get worse. The patch notes will not mention this. More bugs will be introduced into the game that will never be fixed.
I think it has to be Khanduras and Paladins. If it’s not Paladins, the forum’s will go radioactive.
Storyline should continue from where VOH left off.
I don’t think we’ll get Diablo as a boss in expansion 2. I think Mephisto or his cult followers may expedite Diablo’s return in some way, so that Diablo is set up for expansion 3 (if we even get one). Unless we get some kind of Diablo build up via seasons before expansion 2, it just wouldn’t make sense to drop Diablo into expansion 2, only for us to kill him with zero character development etc. Then again, these are Diablo writers, and their writing has almost always been quite mediocre, so who knows at that point.
I think some kind of shield-bearer class is guaranteed though. It’s just been so highly requested and constantly brought up before launch, before VoH’s launch etc. that Blizzard would be absolutely tone deaf to not go with a some kind of shield-bearer class this time around. They did the whole “do something new” for VoH, so now it’s time to do something familiar, even if SB really just resembles a D3 monk. Besides, if we go to the western continent, especially the lower portion, a paladin-type class fits that region perfectly, much like how one of the reasons they did SB for VoH, is that it thematically fit the jungle region.
So, my theory is we’ll go to the lower half or lower third of the western continent, as there is a newly added (new as of 2.0/VoH patch), NPC in Gea-Kul, talking about the splendors of the western continent, in a world building sense. Very similar to the NPC in Zarbinzet, that always said “when Akarat wills it, we will find his tomb” since D4 launch.
Agreed, and also think Diablo needs to be in a Diablo game.
