12 characters name max length...why?

I really can’t understand why is the max character length for names only 12 characters. The name I use is more than that and I can’t use it in D4. This is really lame. What is the problem with longer names? 12 characters is really short.

Who needs 12 characters anyway? If I want to read, I pick up a book…

Rejoice that the minimum length is 2… Say hello to my Barbarian named OJ.

The poor blizzard servers couldn’t possibly handle more than 12x10 bytes.

12 characters is more than enough. It’s supposed to be a name not a personal statement. Non-issue.

I like doing full names in RPGs, not just a first name.
It’s fine, I don’t really mind, more than 12 would be nice though.

Design choice to help us avoid the scenario where players construct sentences that ruin overworld immersion.
Imagine walking past “IWearNippleClamps”. 12 Characters helps encourage 1 word entries that are then more likely to be a name.
EDIT: Disclaimer- I would like to categorically state, that in no way, shape, form or function, do I or have I ever used nipple clamps. Neither on myself, nor any other person. These are my personal views and do not reflect those of Blizzard, or the citizens of Fractured Peaks cellars inc.

Get some sweet gloves and just start stabbing.

this is what we are down to as far as complaints. this game is really shaping up to be game of the decade at this point LOL

I passed someone with ICWeiner in beta. Name length doesn’t prevent everything.

Indeed. Not prevent, but discourage. With limited space it’s harder to make full sentences, so players will more likely gravitate towards a name.

Common sense and logic isn’t allowed on these forums. You should know this by now Las.

“I saw someone with xxx name it stops nothing”

Good point there genius. I guess when a law is broken in real life, we should just abolish it, since it clearly prevents nothing…

“Awww damn a murder, might as well stop doing what we can to prevent those now.”

I’m amazed some of these forum participants function enough to feed themselves well enough to stay alive, or remember to breath.

It’s all good, buddy. Ebonbolt is a decent poster, he was just trying to bring up a real experience he had within context while leaving the door open for other possible solutions.
Ultimately, like bots, there is no hard fix. We can bury the thread and stick to constructive feedback…like finding a way to put force move + interact on the same key before launch.

…so that they can sell you a longer character limit in the shop.

No, I kid (at least I hope)… though I wouldn’t be surprised to see name changes sold as MTX.

Waiting to see the Frost sorceress named Frostitute.

But, but… OJ did nothing wrong.

Why even have a minimum though? What’s wrong with single character names?

Maybe the minimum is 1, I haven’t tested… I did make a character named OJ, so I know you can have 2 char names.

It’s probably to limit people’s ability to write out some inflammatory nonsense as their name though it is a little short. I have an uncommon but not unusual real life first name that isn’t too shy of the 12 character limit so some people may come up hard against that. 15 might have been a better call

ISuckNipples would of course still be possible

Great!
Now somebody is going to steal my name. :scream:
