I think it would be a cool touch if near the end of the season 24 for there to start to be very rare drops of ZOD runes. A ZOD rune socketed in an ethereal would allow you to bring the one ethereal back after the season. I think this would be in the spirit of Diablo II ethereals and create an interesting path forward.
For those who do not recall or didn’t experience it, a ZOD rune was the only way to apply permanence to an ethereal in D2.
Or if you found one with repairs durability in XX seconds.
Why would you need a ZOD rune when the etherals are indestructable in the first place?
I believe the OP isn’t suggesting a Zod rune for the sake of making the Ethereals indestructible, but instead for the sake of allowing Ethereal runes socketed with a Zod rune to transfer into non-season.
In short:
Diablo 2 version of Zod rune = Making Ethereal item indestructible and thus permanent.
Diablo 3 version of Zod rune = Allowing Ethereal item to transfer to Non-season at season’s end and thus permanent.
Either way OP, I don’t see your idea happening. Especially since it wasn’t in the ptr.

Which is why it’s a bad idea. Not only are the ethereals already ridiculously OP, they would distort leaderboards, give an enormous advatage to those finding godly ethereals and discriminate those not playing seasons.
When will you people stop moaning about making every season theme permanent? They are themes, temporary themes! Enjoy it while you still can. Bringing ethereals to non-season will just ruin the little balance there is left in the game.

And can’t be inserted into a weapon.
Like when they buff the living hell out of a skill without resetting the era leaderboards, making all the previous 3-12 months pushes completely irrelevant? Or like when they nerf the living hell out of the meta build, then they don’t reset the era leaderboards for several months making it virtually impossible to get a spot on the leaderboard until they reset? Or the lack of a ban wave in non-season for like the last 6-7 years, giving cheaters 10,000+ paragon to push every new patch?
I am against keeping the power of ethereals after the season, but come on, non-season era boards have been a joke for many, many seasons.

Noone puts a ZOD rune in eth weapons that a merc wears.
It’s a waste of expensive rune.
They make an insight or infinity for weapon and fortitude for chest piece.
temporary themes that involve items which then disappear is one of the most demotivating anti season theme i could ever think of.
