WTF is with CAPTCHA on login

For the first time ever I just got some ridiculous captcha dialogue on the login screen, and my eyes ain’t what they used to be, so I failed 5 times before I finally got the stupid thing.

Why am I seeing that today? Never seen it before in the last 10 years.

It is relatively new but yes, it is part of the login challenge system. It is rarely used and I have no idea what triggers it.

Not even on a VPN on that machine…I’ll renew the IP and see what happens…But that’s also a pain because I have to reset the IP in Synergy as well…

Blizzard and their bright ideas…There is literally NO reason to hack a D3 account these days.

No, there is not. However your Battlenet account is a totally other issue. Even without game licenses it can be used for spam and advertising in some games, or on forums. Depending on what licenses you have on it. Whatever happened it simply detected a change or Blizz forced a check.

Over on the WoW boards last week (I think?) people were commenting on needing to log back in to the Launcher and that some were being asked for the Auth who had not been asked in a long time. I really do think Blizz simply issued a reset challenge, not that you did anything.

oooooh sweeet

i hope they are using this to check if people are actually playing.

No.

It is an option for a security challenge when logging into Battlenet launcher. It has nothing to do with individual games. Popping up challenges in the middle of game play is harmful to the actual gamers.

it’s also helpful. would help clear a lot of the leaderboards, which would help a lot of honest players.

Already have the mobile authenticator on my phone… I really don’t want to be seeing captchas… lol

I used to have a D3 keyfob auth, but the battery got weak and I had to swap out. Can’t even get those anymore. lol

Nope. Worse, attaching the Mobile Auth now requires a contract cell phone. Most pre-paid ones don’t work with it nor does VOIP.

what changed to require cell service contract?

I don’t know. I just know that now setting up the Auth requires setting up what used to be called “SMS Protect” which is the text messaging service. That has restrictions on it. It only accepts numbers that are matched to your registered country and that are flagged by the Govt as contract numbers.

Cricket in particular tends to have bought a bunch of previously burner phone number and are giving then out as contract. It messes with people.

Blizz goes by whatever the govt has the numbers tagged as.

looks like you can go through chrome or google to do it, though those have their own verification processes. ipads have to use this method.

i could be wrong i’m not 100% sure i havent done it myself in a long time.

i really miss playing WoW Legion on my ipad.

It would be much more of a detriment than a help across the board.

eventually, because all the botters would be gone and people would ignorantly question why it’s there and needed. I’m not saying drop a captcha during the last 30 seconds of the GR boss fight. I’m saying drop a captcha every 8-12 rift turn-ins/bounty turn-ins.

So about 3 captchas an hour give or take. Personally that would be far more of an negative impact on my gaming that any botter. I wouldn’t compete for the top ranks regardless, nor would the majority of the playerbase.

you realize hardly anyone does because of the cheating?

You do realize that captchas are machine solvables and benefit no one? All they do is annoy legit players while doing absolutely nothing against cheaters.

And that would be the same cheaters or not, can’t you read?

obviously i dont mean captcha itself, what do i look like, an amateur? internal game checks are far superior. Even something as ridiculously simple as clicking an icon that appears in random locations on the game screen while a short random timer declines to 0 and releasing would completely DECIMATE any bott scripter. It would shut down overnight.

At best.
