Won't let me equip Primal Ancient to my follower

I upgraded my Eun -Jang- Do to a primal ancient. It won’t let me equip to my Templar Follower even though he already has a legendary Eun-Jang-Do. I do not know if this is a bug or working as intended.

I haven’t checked to see if it’s possible to upgrade a follower token using primordial ashes. That would be hilarious!

Well bummer. Don’t know why they wouldn’t be allowed but it is what it is. Thanks for reply.
