Couple of questions on this set. New Class Set: The Typhon’s Veil
* 2-Piece Bonus: Double the duration of Hydras and increase the number of heads on multi-headed Hydras by two.
Does increasing the head count increase the damage as well?
* 4-Piece Bonus: Damage taken is reduced by 8% for each Hydra head alive as long as there is one available. Each time you take damage, a Hydra heads dies.
There has to be a lengthy ICD on this right? Otherwise it completely sucks cause it will be gone in 1 second.
* 6-Piece Bonus: Hydras deal 1000% increased damage for each Hydra head alive.
Again, this seems like it will suck because of the Hydra head dying right?
Onto other points - the 3 weapons we will use are Deathwish, Etched Sigil and Serpent Sparker.
- [Etched Sigil]
- The bonus granted by this item now occurs 1 second after channeling has begun.
- [Deathwish]
- The bonus granted by this item now occurs 1 second after channeling has begun.
Changes to these 2 already nerfs this Hydra build significantly. /sigh Fix bazooka wizard another way! Don’t nerf other wizard builds.
Finaly, I’ll compare this build in damage to other builds that can use Hydras, but first a couple of notes.
-
You will rarely have the full damage bonus of 10,000% due to Hydras losing their heads.
-
Same thing with the damage reduction bonus as above. Rarely will be at 80%
-
Don’t need increased duration on the 2-piece as you can always have 2 Hydras up with serpents
-
The set bonus makes Mammoth Hydra rune useless. Where as we can include Mammoth Hydra in other sets for the higher damage.
So by my thoughts. This set will suck compare to Tal Rasha’s and LoN/LoD builds /sigh. I made many posts before on the importance of making a new set change actual mechanics that will increase damage.

Not sure if I like the when damage taken. But perhaps with enough shield they will stay alive?
Hydras… again. That’s a bummer.

I agree with this. Mirror Images would have been better imo.
Imagine if the new set said this instead. Super simple and uses Mirror images and Hydras.
New Class Set: The Typhon’s Veil
- 2-Piece Bonus: Mirror Images now cast their own individual Hydras
- 4-Piece Bonus: Damage taken is reduced by 10% per active Hydra
- 6-Piece Bonus: Hydras deal 2000% increased damage for each active Hydra

Two Hydras; 5 heads each. Is that 80% DR for a three headed Hydra? Will the hydras cast your runed frozen nova or baseline from Magistrate?
And of course, we’ll have a 10,000% modifier on our 6 piece, but can we keep it up?
We’ll have some juicy modifers though; 600% Hydra on both weapon and helm!
Haven’t tested it in ages, but last I checked:
The current version of the Magistrate casts an unruned Frost Nova, regardless of if you run Frost Nova on your bar. Guess we’ll have to see if they changed that behaviour with the updated Magistrate on PTR.
That’s different from any other auto cast of an ability out there that I know of.
Would have liked to see mirror images aswell as familiar worked in somehow.
Hmm, does this mean that my sole source of damage output is going to be from these two hydras? Because the damage boost doesn’t apply to the wizard’s other skills, so they are going to deal next to no damage at higher tiers. Not sure it’s going to be a fun build. So what - I just keeping spamming the hydra skill to keep up the maximum number of heads while running around to avoid getting hit and waiting for them to kill enemies?

Any high end build always puts all damage into 1 ability. This is no different than any other build out there. The only difference is this set focuses 1 ability vs Tals that can focus any ability like Meteor or Frozen Orb

The optimal build is probably to use Deathwish and Etched Sigil. Channel Arcane Torrent: Flame Ward for damage reduction. Etched Sigil will make it cast Hydra every second, and Deathwish will increase the damage of your hydras as long as you channel.
When the possibility of a hydra-focused build was first mooted here, I initially thought of the demon hunter’s marauder set, where you get a damage boost based on the number of hydras you had out, but I suppose Blizzard didn’t want it to simply be a carbon copy of another class set.
Props to the design team for wanting to a try a different mechanic, but this just seems very clunky to me. We will see if there is sufficient time during the PTR phase for enough feedback to be given to the developers, but this one seems pretty much set in stone.
I wish that Manald works with Lightning Hydra…
I dont like the 2pc A head dies when Wiz get hurt…
I’d rather they do something like for every 10% HP damage, a hydra head dies.
Im interested in some things as well.
Does the hydra head dying prevent the damage from that hit completely? How does it interact with Illusionist? If you etched/channel/hydra will you continuously spawn a renewing “shield”?
Do the Hydras made by clones count towards the set bonus? Are they effected by taskers/enforcer?
Lots of testing, but a high aps archon/hydra/torrent/manald/orotz/fracture/enforcer build seems likely, especially because you can wear chants in S20 while having etch/deathwish both in cube. Unless they broke that already?
