Is there any way to make this set actually helpful and impactful for people who want to play S24 as a fresh wizard? or I should just pick another class that has a good early starter set?
As someone who loves Vyr archon and plays it extensively, I’d say you’re better off picking another class for a starter set. That is of course, assuming that efficiency is the goal. Vyr Archon without chantodo hits like a wet noodle sadly.
Now if you don’t mind efficiency, then you could always utilize vyr and/or LoD to farm for another wizard set like fb.
Vyr’s FO may actually beat out Chantodo Vyr’s in season 24 because of the ethereal buff. It’s never been that far behind. I was testing a bit of Vyr’s FO on PTR. I’m not very good at the rotation, but it was clear the potential was there.
The best old Vyr’s FO clear I can find is GR125 at 3k paragon from Looloo in S16.
We can do a rough estimate off that clear. Obviously not everyone is as skilled as Looloo, but it’s a good baseline for the max tier potential. S16 had free RoRG. Looloo used Endless Walk + CoE + Karini w/ free RoRG (to gain Leoric’s Crown), but S16 didn’t have Squirt’s so now you could run Squirt’s + CoE + Karini + RoRG to get the same multiplier without losing Leoric’s. Or, with Enchantress CDR now you can actually forego the RoRG (+ Leoric’s Crown) entirely and still run Trapped + Zei’s (without needing Gogok). So I’m going to call the free RoRG from S16 a wash.
Vyr’s was first buffed to 100% in 2.6.4 just before S16, so the Vyr’s stack power level was the same as now.
So the build has gained Wizardspike (the FO item, not the ethereal) and the ethereal boost, lost OoID, but potentially gained Unity (if you can manage the CDR well enough to drop RoRG + Leoric’s). It’s also gained the follower bonuses.
Wizardspike is a 9-10 GR gain from the multiplier, plus maybe another GR for the free Orbs. Ethereals are at least a 5 GR gain, and I think it’s more like 6ish for Vyr’s FO. Oculus has up to 7 additional APoC which is huge for Vyr’s FO since it’s a very resource starved build. Or Wizardspike (the ethereal version) has massive attack speed (= more Archon stacks) + the Stricken-like mechanic, which is also pretty valuable.
So I’m pretty sure the combination of Wizardspike + ethereals means Vyr’s FO has gained a good 15 GRs on that S16 clear. Which would put it as high as GR140 at 3k paragon. That’s absolutely competitive with Chantodo Vyr’s.
The only downside is that Vyr’s FO isn’t nearly as good of a farming build. It’s a pretty terrible farming build actually. And Chantodo Vyr’s didn’t get a buff, so it’ll be a weaker farming build in S24 compared to other builds that can leverage an ethereal buff to farm 5+ tiers higher. But Vyr’s FO is definitely an option for pushing on the Vyr’s board. You’ll just want to use something else as your primary farming build, Vyr’s FO is basically a push-only build.
Okay. Thanks to Wizard Spike you can even deal kind of damage while in Archon. At least as long as you have the Triumvirate buff up. LOD Archon Twister should be able to do GR 150. How far can LOD Archon FO go?
Good to hear that. I guess I will go to another class then.
Ok. I knew that Archon set will be terrible farming set for starter wizard, but just want to get some confirmation from wizard expert.
You’re most likely right. I was sort of talking about the archon skills themselves (glances around nervously). I know bad habit…
Archon skills? What are those?
Season 20 had the same sets as this season, and I went ahead and looked at the clears at the 6 hour mark I had recorded myself, as well as Divinity & Lionhearted (GR75), which you can browse on the leaderboards.
It basically breaks down to the season start for these sets at the 8 hour mark roughly being:
50% Barbarians (fastest GR75 clear: 4h30m)
25% Witch Doctors (fastest GR75 clear: 5h20m)
10% Necromancers (fastest GR75 clear: 4h30m)
10% Demon Hunters (fastest GR75 clear: 5h40m)
3% Wizards (fastest GR75 clear: 5h45m)
1% Crusaders (fastest GR75 clear: 5h15m)
1% Monks (fastest GR75 clear: 6h30m)
Mind you, LoD wasn’t guaranteed to be the second gem that season, which will help speed things up, and also, player count per class is going to vary differently. Going solo this season though will probably not be the best approach.
Yes, most likely I will go solo in this season.
I used to hate DMO starts the most. Now, I hate Vyr’s starts the most. It was an absolutely PAINFUL slog.
That’s why I started LoD FO!
Understandable, since you need a lot of support items just to get the set rolling. Of course, that’s not to say that Vyr’s the only one like that, only that it’s one of the most extreme examples imo.
Thank God for LoD!
It was insane, I had six piece of Vyr, no chantodo’s, no Reaver, no Zodiac, no Swarmi. Couldn’t get anywhere. Got carried until I got Firebird’s. Ironically, I had Firebird’s up before I had Vyr’s up.
Yep sounds about right. It was a reason why we had called the Vyr set, a 10-piece set ever since it’s revamp back in patch 2.3.0 since it required (at least) the Vyr set, chantodo set, Fazula, and the Swami to be pretty much functional.
Kind of a reason why I’d just recommend folks to either farm a different set, or utilize LoD instead of trying to use Vyr as Haedrig’s gift at season start.
In past seasons where I actually started Vyr’s, I usually go for Messerschmidt’s first (1 in 4 on 2-handed axe upgrades), then Swami.
It’s easier to get Messerschmidt’s vs. Obsidian ring, plus Messerschmidt’s tends to work better when you don’t have much CDR on gear. Obsidian Ring really requires 45ish CDR to actually be okay, and ideally 50+. Hard to get that much CDR on your gear in the first few hours. As a fresh 70 with 6p Vyr’s and nothing else, I’d rather have Messerschmidt’s over Obsidian ring.
Then after Messerschmidt’s, you want at least one of Fazula or Swami to make it playable. I tend to go for Swami first. Swami can be easier to get than Fazula’s, although that depends on how many DBs you have left. It’s 1 in 5 upgrading wizard hats, but whether you can try to get it this way will depend on how many DBs you have to spend to get Messerschmidt’s. If you get Messerschmidt’s on the first attempt, then spending some DBs trying for Swami can make sense. But if you have to use blood shards for Swami, then you get helms in the pool too, and it ends up being about the same chances as Fazula at that point (1 in 18 for Swami via gambling, 1 in 17 for Fazula).
Chantodo’s is kind of a pain since it’s useless unless you have both. So I go for Messerschmidt’s + one of Swami/Fazula first.
This season I actually completely ignored the journey and did the LoD start. I actually saved my gifts for HC. A while after I got rolling with LoD, I went back and did all the journey objectives except ‘fully equip a follower’ in chapter 2, and that blocks chapters 3 and 4 from completing even though all the objectives were done. So when I switched to HC as soon as I hit 70 and equipped my follower, chapters 2/3/4 immediately completed and I could claim all 3 gifts. Instantly having 6p Vyr’s as a fresh 70 in HC was kinda nice. It worked pretty well. HC elitists might considering it cheating, but whatever!
