Will Diablo 4 have more than one expansion?
Or is that too ambitious right now?
Doubt it… They’ll just go all in on mtx.
That will depend on how well the game and MTX sold.

I think the expansion model for new games is dead and buried. There will be tons of small scale DLC but probably no mainstay expansion like Reaper of Souls.
Blizzard’s marketing machine is going to be in full swing talking about “expansions” or “expansion packs” because that gets people’s hype and nostalgia going, but what they really mean is “pay us for horse armor then we’ll see”.
It will probably have seasonal themes like PoE. Because Diablo now has to compete with the Diablo clone.
Expansions? Most likely not.
Multiple DLC’s? Most likely.
Diablo 5 will come out in 2035.
Many of us won’t make Diablo 6.

If you think about it, there’s no reason to make a Diablo 5 in the future.

No ofc. Eventually they ll make the palette more saturated and sell it as Diablo V.
I won’t be optimistic just because they said that. People come and go, plans change, projects scrapped and trashed. If they realize they will gain more money by solely investing in China or somewhere across the world again, they won’t hesitate to throw the second expansion away to focus their workforces towards anything that offer more profits in a shorter time span. No one can guarantee that they will go along with the plans of developing more than one expansions.
If I turn out to be wrong I’d be pleasantly surprised though.

While the developers certainly stated their intent to have multiple expansions for D4, it may not happen. They stated a similar thing back before D3 was released, and in the end, we still ended up with just one expansion.
So all in all, only time will tell.

I’m expecting more along the lines of the D3 necro pack, where you purchase additions piecemeal. But maybe they can offer special “expansion” bundles where you can buy new classes + new acts together. Many active players are probably gonna want to buy 100% of that sort of major content, even classes they may not be interested in, just to “max out” their D4 license.
If they consider a season to be an expansion, then there will likely be 2-3 and maybe even 4 per year, and maybe for 10+ years… so, quick estimate is about 30 but that can fluctuate. Also, there could be more, actual, expansion-like things.
I imagine seasons are a bit like limited DLC.
I believe the words of the developers said there would be expansions. My own personal take is a least two, then Sanctuary would be fully mapped out.
They clearly said Expansions several times if people do not want to believe them or if they have a different interpretation of what an expansion is, so be it. If hey want to use the dead horse “well they said . . . . . before” nothing more can be said.

Yeah it will break the curse by having zero expansions lol.
I can’t speak for others. But for me, it’s less of me not believing the developers, as I actually do believe they intend to have multiple expansions for D4 (just as I believe they intended to for D3 as well when they unveiled the game over a decade ago); instead it’s more of me simply saying that we may end up not having multiple expansions for whatever reason.
That said, I certainly would love for D4 to have multiple expansions, especially if the expansions have us unlocking more areas of Sanctuary and actually visiting areas we never been to before in the games such as Skovos Isles, Xiansai, or Ureh (then again we could see Ureh in a season update rather than expansion since it’s in the Kehjistan region).
But once again, only time will tell if we do get to see such areas in-game. I truly hope we do.
