Widescreen without limits is a REAL problem. (Who can post links?)

It’s been brought up that Ultra Widescreen and higher ratios such as 32:9 + are problematic; not only for balance in PvP (which is a huge area for me personally), but it is game-breaking in PvM as well, and needs to be addressed.

Mobs spawn at the far edges of your screen and do not react to you until you close in. Effectively removing all difficulty from ranged classes like the sorceress and amazon.

Example with 32:9 ratio. (@32:54)

And that’s not the worst of it. The real problem isn’t being able to see so much further, (though clearly unbalanced), it’s the ability to cast at infinite range.

In fact, it looks like you can set your screen ratio even higher if you try.
There are reports of being able to teleport an entire act in a single teleport.
Or rain blizzard down from 5x screens away. Example Below.

Before all the people crying “It’s 2021!” storm in; I’m not saying to remove ultrawide compatibility altogether. But in it’s current implementation it’s clearly broken.

At the minimum there needs to be an effective range-limit on how far out you can click or cast.

What really needs to happen is for the smart guys over at Blizzard to put their heads together and come up with even better solutions to the issue.

You’re completely correct. This isn’t people whining, we want pvp and pvm similar to D2legacy.

This is game breaking, if they allow it I would refuse certain matchups in general. It’s essentially giving people sanctioned-farcast, aside from the pvm issues.

This is a must fix.

Theoretical:

For PvP, if you are hostile to anyone, you immediately get black bars to bring you down to a 4:3 screen ratio. Problem solved.

Not really sure what to do about PvM. I guess if you’re worried about it, don’t play with anything but a 4:3 screen resolution?

It’s not really a case of “if you’re worried about it…” It’s an easily exploitable way to get through the game without a challenge and needs addressing. The game effectively stops working as intended.

Well Brevik has said this all along long before D2:R was announced that this would be an issue without completely remaking the game.

I suppose they could make invisible “aggro ghosts” at certain points to the left and right of your character depending on your screen resolution settings. The monsters would aggro to them first until they see you, then go to you afterwards.

I don’t even know if that would be possible.

Making mobs aggro at longer distances for widescreen players is one thought.

And, like i mentioned previously, actually limiting the range of how far you can click and cast skills.

I’m not disagreeing with you on this at all, it is a problem that should be addressed. If they were willing to remaster this game, they should have responded with “Challenge accepted.” when Brevik said this was going to be an issue without a remake.

If we can throw a wild idea out there that might help them, then it’s worth discussing.

All they need to do is add a cast limit so you can’t cast past a certain range or shoot past a certain range.

As for visibility that is something I would say they could frame it out when you declare hostility so you can’t see past a certain area. Just like a basic overaly like the borders around the Attribute screen. Hell they could put past pvp stats there and stuff that will not be affected if you click on it etc but, will also have no bearing on the actual fight. When you both loose hostility it goes back to normal.

yeah at least fog or darkness to limit visibility of enemies/players.

I think it can be technically solved by game rules such as :-

  • Auto match players with same screen ratio
  • Force players with wider screen ratio to down grade when they want to join other players with narrower ratio.

etc

I use a 21:9 screen. If im locked into 16:9 its a instant refund

Here is a sorc with a 21:9 screen:

game is working fine in my opinion
the only way to get “d2 legacy no changes” is to play on a 4:3 screen as already mentioned
if i wanted to play on a 4:3 I wouldn’t be purchasing this remake

What was really funny was a barb leaping all the way across the screen.

I was just considering a trapper that can drop traps that far away. Maybe you could even drop a trap set on Gloams before you even agro them!

That might solve pvp issues, but does nothing for the broader issues I mention about PvM. Characters shouldnt be able to see, attack, and kill mobs before they even react to you.

I’m not sure how you can say that. Did you watch the two clips I posted? You think its fine to be able to kill mobs from 2x screens away who dont even attack you back?

Time to buy ultra wide monitor,

LoL, if this issue is not resolved, I might try to find some software which can treat two 16:9 monitors as one 32:9 monitor.

Lol that would be funny but… Wouldn’t that just make your character split in half between both screens since they are always centered?

Fog of war has fixed these problems before or just having the monsters and players fade away at a certain distances

Looks like the correct solution. Instead of sharp black bars at both sides, fade and blend with black color.

I understand your point, but having better computers has ALWAYS been an advantage. Why stop now? What makes ultra-wide monitors different from, say a 6-core or a top of the line internet connection? What makes ultrawide different from a gaming mouse?

It’s definitely much harder to play on a potato, but it’s doable. You can also play the game with an average PC and it will play properly. Those who want to spend on tech… get to enjoy their tech. If you want it, then buy it yourself.

Welcome to capitalism.
