Why the Region lockout?

Why can I not play my level 70 character in America with my level 70 European friends? It made a very twisted sense when you had that terrible real-money auction house but now you just keep me from playing with my new friends that live in Scotland. I’m just really frustrated that the only thing keeping me from having fun with my friends is Blizzard itself.

It is not Blizzards fault if you do not understand how things work.

You are allowed to make a character on the EU server from anywhere in the world. Your EU server friends should be able to carry you and gear you up pretty easily. You only show a level 41 (not paragon 41) Crusader on the EU server and no other characters on the other servers.

Please feel free to explain. Otherwise your input isn’t constructive and ultimately rude and useless. Feel free to explain why, in a game that has no effective economy, Me playing with my friend here in the states is, in any way, different than me playing with my friends in the UK. I will await your, hopefully less disrespectful, reply.

There are two ways realtime multiplayer games can run:
1: Regional servers. The main benefit is that most people have access to a reasonably close server which allows for low latency gameplay. The main drawback is that it does split the game community as a world whole, and typically does not allow the transfer of characters/items between regions.
2: A single server. (example: Eve Online) The main benefit is that the community is not split. The main drawback is that anyone that is geographically distant and/or a high number of hops away suffer from gameplay issues due to latency and other connection problems.

If they were to “link” up all of the regional servers as a world whole, everyone would be subject to lag based upon the slowest link between the regions due to keeping every region in sync with one another. I don’t want to play with immense lag.

As Khord mentioned, if you have friends on the EU server that are well established, they should have no problems powering you up to 70 and getting you a base level set so you can run with them.

Fun thinking factoid: “Cloud” internet can closely resolve the single server scenario, depending on how popular the game is. (Starlink)

I have two level 70 characters in the Americas. If you are in the social EU server you just can’t see them. I’m not too sure why you think I would lie about that. I hit that level 41 partially by being carried by my EU friends and I can say for certain that it is not fun. They have to either stop progressing to carry me or I have to play a bullet hell game and die constantly with them while they progress. It’s just so frustrating that I have in my possession a character that is ready to play at their level but I’m being stopped by some arbitrary concept of region segregation with no discernable reason.

So… let me get this straight. Players cry because they don’t have specific servers, i.e. regional servers, then decide to complain because there are specific servers, and they don’t overlap with other servers?

You cannot create a character in one region and play that same character in another region, do you understand now? It is not that default to comprehend. If you do not like the way it works you can go play something else. Like I said before it is not Blizzards fault if you do not like or understand something.

You know you love the silly comments that some people come up with. It puts a smile on your face.

It’s a call of the marketing team. You can have different promotions and stuff in different regions (like XP buff in China).

Please don’t make it sound it is hard to build a character that can keep up / contribute to your friends’ games…
Takes a few hours at most…

I have lvl70 characters on all servers (eu, us, asia) and almost all classes. From the times powerleveling had yet to be invented…
Where inferno, especially a3 and a4, was still a challenge…

The reason is that network latency exists. You’re in the USA. Your friends are in Europe. So, if you played with them on the EU server, you’d have horrible latency, and if they played with you on the US server, they’d have horrible latency. The end result would be that at least one of you would have horrible latency, which means whoever was playing on their non-local server would have a much worse experience than whoever was playing on their local server. In softcore, that’s an annoyance. In hardcore, that’s dead heroes.

The only thing they’re preventing is playing with your American characters in Europe which is silly if you can still play in Europe which you can. Players from all three regions can play on the same server. If the reason were latency why is that allowed?

I had no intention of calling you a liar. I was pointing out that you have no heroes listed in your profile on the NA server and that the only character on the EU server is a level 41 Sader. Your EU friends can run T6 with your sader and get you to level 70 in minutes. Then they can run a few GR’s to get you gear and paragon and once you have a build up and running, you should be able to find a level that you can all play together.

As far as no discernable reason to segregate the servers, Meteorblade correctly stated that lag time is the largest reason to run multiple servers for different parts of the globe.

-Lag
-Legal reasons, like in the EU, we still have some more freedom of speech, until we are taken over too. the EU has other Laws than the current ‘USA’.

Good luck there, you’ll need it.

A present from Europe, to feel better:

Recently, the Armoury website frequently has issues with displaying heroes, even if people have played them recently. When someone pointed out that they couldn’t see your heroes, what they meant was they looked for your heroes on the Armoury site and couldn’t find them. They’re not suggesting you’re lying about the heroes existing, just that they couldn’t look at their paragon levels / gear.

However, it’s just the Armoury site that’s wonky, the underlying data that it should extract from is perfectly fine, and available to the Blizzard API that d3planner uses. So, with that in mind, here are the OP’s US heroes…

Crusader - Sigismund
https://maxroll.gg/d3planner/622479690

Necromancer - Senshi
https://maxroll.gg/d3planner/458453142

These heroes are paragon 438, and the Necro is still wearing yellow items, and doesn’t have a full set yet.

Earlier this afternoon, I saw someone asking for a level 1-70 boost in General Chat on the EU server. So, I boosted his hero to 70, took him through a T16 Vault so he had plenty of gold for training artisans, took him to get Kanai’s Cube, took him through a Not The Cow Level as there’s lots of resplendent chests for legendaries / set items to drop out of, then ran him through a GR100.

He started at level 20ish. Under an hour later, he had over 300 paragon. If you created a new Crusader or Necro on EU, getting them to the same gear / paragon level as your current US heroes would take no more than 2-3 hours.

Heck, throw me a Friend request and I’ll carry all three of you through as many GR100s as you’ve got keys for. It’d takes me roughly 3-3.5 minutes per run. An hour of those, and you’d be well on your way to 700 paragon.

Network packets take longer to get to and from a remote server than to a local one because the speed of the network packet transmission, even over fibre optic at the speed of light, is not infinite.

Please stop trying to cram politics into something that’s clearly physics.

Please stop trying to cram powerboosting into this discussion.

This is one of those issues were thr overall benefit of lower ping and language commonality far outweighs a somewhat esoteric use by you.

I fear you will have to restart in Europe.

Agreed. Well said for once.

Then why are American players allowed to play on European servers at all? The ping is the same only the characters are different.

If want, suggest request microtransactions. Server transfer for like $100. Or just wait for the next PTR.
