This is mainly about Diablo III.
Hey, I’m just genuinely curious. Since this game lets you choose and select your builds and skills on the fly, what is the point of having more than one of the same class? For example, why have more than one barbarian character? Or more than one Crusader for instance?
I see people sometimes with 3 barbarians, or 3 demon hunters and I don’t really see the point when you can change your skills on the fly.
Is it because of seasons? If so, how come people just don’t start a new season on their old characters as a “fresh start?”
Nevaaah! Lol. My main is my main and i don’t want to have to constantly start a new character and play lots of hours a day. So cool and calm gameplay it is for me. And i honestly have no idea what the crack was here.
For me it’s rp purposes. One of my Wizards is an archon specialist, while another focuses on fire.
Also I used to restart a hero for season, but that messed up existing saved builds for that character and thus I simply just make a new hero instead.

I’m HC so if one rips and I’m only one barb with 3 builds in the Armory, it’s all gone.
I have to level another Barb and then build the Armory again.
What I prefer to do is level 2 or 3 so each one is his own man and doesn’t effect the other in any way.

Yes again for HC reasons : if the servers are laggy, i play with my second DH who has less better gear ; )

I do it because it’s quicker to change from one hero to another than change the gear / build (especially since the Armoury has a nasty rare bug of eating items).
With the exception of my main Barb (Meteorblade) and one of my DHs (Thwang), I tend to name all my heroes after the build they’re in. For example, I’ve got Crusaders called BlessShield, BlessHammer, Condemn and Invoker, and so on. It makes it easy to remember which build is on which hero.
What I’d like is the ability to use the same gear on every hero’s followers, i.e. you gear up an Enchantress, and that geared Enchantress is available to any hero, rather than having to switch gear between each hero’s Enchantresses.

this is exactly why I have multiple of the same class…I really really hate the armory it does NOT function properly. If it’s a class I’m pushing on then I’ll make the same class for speeds since the same gear can drop for both its a win win.

Aww, that makes sense. I had a feeling it was because of builds, but wasn’t sure what the big deal was , but then I read it’s easier since you don’t have to keep redistributing paragon points based on a build as well.
Seems that I have some duplicate classes from pre armory era. I tent to use one in season (rebirth) and keep one on normal. I keep pretending I might play ns during a season… lol…
The ns one I use also for dealing with gear coming in after season end.
There’s a few reasons.
Hardcore has already been mentioned. Good to have a the same class ready for when you RIP.
Another reason is that in I might want to have one of each class always ready in non-season. So I have multiple, because one might be to rebirth. Since you can only rebirth 3 each season, some will remain duplicated in non-season.
There are also some achievements that are like level two [class] to [60,70].
Speaking of achievements, there are also some that are like listen to all of male guardian (pando 1 and 2) and female guardian conversations in the campaign.
Also mentioned, sometimes it’s about not having to change builds. Maybe I have two barbs because one is a DPS role and the other is a zDPS.

For me…
- One character can have 10 armoury builds stored which may not be enough. For my NS DH, I’ve only got builds for M6, UE, GoD, S6, zDPS and LoD set up… I’ll be out of room for any Nat builds I may create down the track.
- Even if it is enough slots in the armoury, that character’s inventory cannot hold the gear for 10 individual builds across more than 3 sets.
- If using the stash to hold gear for builds, I’m currently using up two stash tabs for one character. There isn’t 14 tabs that I can devote to holding my final builds.
- I don’t want to set up all this again after each season.
- In HC, you need to have back up gear and spare leveled up characters of the same class in case you RIP.
For my SC DHs on my alt account, I have one I keep rebirthing each season and one NS one I modify during season downtime with upgrades found during seasons.
I have two SC Saders but due to lack of stash space, I need to be organised with their builds… all their build gear is housed in their inventory and I offload their inventory into an empty stash tab when I play that character and put it all back in the inventory at end of play.
Similarly for the two SC Monks I have and one SC Wizard I currently have… will probably have two NS wizards after S27.
First, referencing earlier posts, the Armory is a dumpster fire which is why I welded mine shut. For me, any melee class/build/game play is boring. I like casting/shooting builds, so I have multiple characters of the same class. This makes it easier to tweak each one without changing gear, gems, skills, passives, followers and mechanics. In other words, to answer your question: there’s lots of good reasons why.
I do it to have a different build due to not trusting the armory to switch gear and build. Besides it saves me a step in changing builds. All I have to do is log out and log into a different character of the same class.
I only do it on hardcore when i decide ok it’s time to push a higher GR, might as well have another char ready.
Well put honestly. I can see why someone wouldn’t want to hassle with changing and re organizing everything just to try a different build.
Thanks.
They are used as mules for gear.
I had 2 different DH: one for supporting another for damaging due to different paragon distribution.
Season rebirth make you character completely new (except play time) the founded lores also resets
Usually roleplay and/or stash management.
S26,
I have a Mara and Strafe DH.
I have a WW/Rend, HoTA, and Frenzy Barb.
I have a Thorns and Fists Sader.
I have one HC Barb that is WW/Rend.
Before I started S26,
I have one non-season Barb that will be replaced with my Frenzy Barb.
I have two non-season Monks as mules.
I didn’t play HC before I started S26.
Each character has their own name and it’s based on their build. Maybe I will do the same for S27, I don’t know.
Also, some people only play a few of the classes. Why let an empty character slot go to waste? Why not make 2 or more of _________________ ?
Aesthetics, primarily. I generally have both a male and female character of each class, geared for different builds or purposes, usually sharing a singular set such as Wastelands. I only do this with the classes I actually like so I do not have multiple Crusaders or Wizards.
Oh, and since I have switched my view and actually enjoy the level-to-70 process, having a character that is still going through it (even if they have stupid paragon levels), allows/forces me to play in ways I would not and generally do not otherwise, with gear that is very subpar and with skills I hadn’t considered before (because one of the few legendary items buffs it.) This means sometimes I’ll just create a character, play to 70, quit and delete and start over again.
That doesn’t even consider Hardcore where I currently only have one character.
