Well, they killed Deckard Cain in D3 and I highly doubt that his book would still be existing in D4.
Diablo game is not Diablo without Cain the Elder .

The way things are going, I honestly would not be surprised if Diablo 4 just didn’t bother with needing to identify items.
It’s not exactly adding much to D3 right now anyway.
The Lost Scrolls of Deckard Cain will be needed to identify items.
Farm for items.
Farm for scrolls.

Based on what we saw at blizzcon. Items dropped completely identified. If that is to stay, then that’ll be a tad displeasing imo, since finding an unidentified item and seeing what it was, was an exciting aspect in Diablo 2 for me.
Even if they don’t kill Deckard Cain, he will died of old age. If I not mistaken, D4 happened after 20 or 30 years from D3.
To be fairly honest, this whole identification function is just an unnecessary relic from the past. It really doesn’t add anything. When the item drops, its properties are already locked in and forcing player to “identify” the item before it can be used is a pointless hurdle.
As memorable as it was to have Cain throughout the Diablo series, I believe it is reasonable to move on to something new. This isn’t a bad time to reinvent the wheel, though this wheel does have returning features. Let us find a new sage that recaptures our imagination and brings wonder when listening to him or her.

Let’s admit it, identification was cool on D1 & D2, after that it’s been unnecessary mouse clicks.
What could be nice to have is few NPCs able to upgrade our items just like Charsi, Larzuk or Urishi have done.
Unidentified items have trade value
D4 should still have Legendary items and they should be rare and identified by a Scroll of Identify. All other magical items should be self identified when they are picked up and placed in inventory.
I would be totally fine with removing the concept of identifying crap.
Could make a cool quest, where you have to go dig it up Cain’s book.
Surely the Horadrim sealed it in some dungeon.
