Increasing cost over time
Either gold cost increasing with level or some reasonably farmable token at most.
Respec should have some cost but it shouldn’t be unreasonable.
Barely any cost while leveling. A noticeable effort when on level cap.
Go the old WoW system. Low cost that increases and reaches a cap after x amount of times. Have a decay system that lowers the cost over time for not using it.
It can be % based so it cannot just be ignored by hoarding gold. Although, with the way D4 is being designed, I don’t think they will be used like they were intended to be used in D3.
No need for a token, or different currencies for that matter either.
This. Make it harder to respec the higher level you are. Respec is good to allow people to try builds as they play, especially the first time or with a class for the first time. This allows them to try things out, but then commit more to it as they gain experience. I am fine with respec being allowed at any point, but it should not be easy/cheap later on.
I kind of think it would be cool to have an item that becomes more and more pricey as you level. it is some sort of container that you purchase and when in your inventory/equipped, it replaces your experience bar and all the experience you gain fills it, rather than your actual experience. Once full, you can consume it to respec once. You would not be allowed to level again until using this, and you can only have one at a time.
Poe basically has a system where cost increases with levels and doesn’t forces you to go full respec if you don’t want to
Respecing single skills is a nice way to do this
Most importantly, there has to be a cooldown. Like, you can only respec once every week at most. It is the only way to protect the respec cost against the endless resource generation in the game.
If it is supposed to take a week, at the release of the game, to generate enough currency to pay for a respec, then a weeks cooldown just means that even when (not if) the currency generation breaks apart later, you can’t circumvent it.
On top of that, an increasing cost also seems sensible.
Use a character-bound respec token currency for the cost. Gold is not a good currency to use here, because it is presumably account-wide. One of your characters should not have to pay for the respec of another of your characters. This only gets worse if the cost is % based on your total gold.
Besides, in all likelihood gold will be useless as a currency in D4. Since that happens in every single A-RPG (and really, most games) ever.
Now, the cost/cooldown should of course be beginner-friendly, so for the first 20 levels there might be no cooldown and no cost. Then at lvl 20+ the cooldown and cost might go up until it reaches the endgame cost.
Last point, and extremely important imo, there should only be an option to pay for a full respec. Even if you only change a single skill, a single skill upgrade, or a single attribute point, the cost should be the same as if you respecced everything. You should still be able to just change that single point of course, but at full price.
Otherwise, you really risk creating a game where the meta is to make builds that can easily and cheaply be changed into other builds. Hurting the build diversity greatly in the process. Every single build in the game has to be seen as its own thing, and not as a part of a cluster of builds you can cheaply respec between.
I like the sound of what the Dev’s say about it being cheap at low levels and rising in cost. I do however hope that they have some form of build slots which we can swap between in town (not freely in the field of course). I enjoy the ability to have several different play styles on one character. I do NOT favor having to make 3 or 4 different chars of one class to enjoy different builds.
Free respecs until you hit max level.
Then have items called respec stones. You can use them to respect X number of skill points or trees, whatever they settle on.
why are you doing this xDDD
Only way to protect the respec system Any and all currency costs lose value over time. Time does not.
well then make it a farmable and unique to hold item
making people log off the game and wait a week to continue playing is the worst possible design
Why would they log out. Play the build you made, or create another character.
you are not being helpful and you know that
there are reasons people want to respec and if its just because they misclicked or had brain lag
putting a real life timer on anything in a game is ridiculous
Add a “Are you sure?” popup before changing your build
And if you somehow managed to make a terrible build that you literally can’t play with, then you have the exact same problem with a farmable currency, since you would not be able to farm that currency. At least with a cooldown, you can salvage the character later.
There is always the option to create a new character though.
you know that you cant be serious about that
people are not just gonna “play an alt character” to just to wait until they can do what they actually want to do
i have provided you a solution
you can add a little repeatable quest or a specific boss/dungeon that you need to clear to respec. it can even thematically fit the purpose
but just “yea nah, just wait a week” is the dumbest thing you could possibly do
and then sell people the option to skip that AHAHAHAHA XD
If you can do that every minute (or similar), then you have essentially free, unlimited respecs.
As should be clear, I really, really dont want to see that.
If you can design a system that greatly limits the ability to respec, which does not break down over time, without having a cooldown, I’d likely be in favor of that.
Cooldowns are just the simple, guaranteed way to accomplish it.
cooldowns are the way to not let people do something in a game to recieve something they want in a game
This will depend heavily upon how many character slots are given. I prefer to play at least one character of every available class. I prefer to have all possible builds of that class on one character. If they don’t have build slots for characters that would mean making 3 or 4 of each class, which won’t be possible if the amount of character slots are very limited.
As for the cooldown idea I am opposed to that entirely. I hate when games have week long cooldowns for things. That is just ridiculous and drives people away from the game for extended periods of time. I hate when games make you wait a week to delete a character. I hate in EVE when skills take a week to learn, etc. Week long cooldowns are a death sentence.
