Is it true that we always want to augment ancient items with the same 3x Flawless Royal gems that would normally be socketed into them for your class?
I’m a Wizard (mostly icy-veins Vyr Archon), so I socket Ruby into weapon (CHD) and Topaz into armor (Intelligence). Would I augment those items with those same FR gems? Or could there be some reason to mix them up?
HOWEVER, I socket a diamond into my helm for CDR. I can’t augment with
diamonds in Caldesann’s Despair. What 3x FR gems should I use in my wizard’s helm? I’m Vyr that stays Archon a lot, so I’m not resource-constrained.
You are wizard, so you are definitely want to use Flawless Royal Gem - Topaz for Caldesann’s Despair.
If you are pushing higher GR, you would want to replace the gems on the socketed gear to Ruby for the Armor boost. Mainly because Wizard is usually have high resistance towards elemental (high Int) but rather low with armor value. Using 5 Flawless Royal Ruby should able to make it up the gap of your defense.
Thank everyone for the replies. Do I want to augment my helmet with a Topaz? I can’t use a diamond (my gem of choice in a helm for CDR) in the cube. But Topaz does not get me intelligence in a helmet (it gets me reduced resource cost, which I don’t care much about since I want stay archon most of the time, so CDR is infinitely more important). If a Topaz won’t augment intelligence in a helm then I would rather use another gem. So does Topaz in a helm augment intelligence or resource cost?
Remember this question is asking about the 3x gems used in augmenting a helm, not just the gems socketing it (some answers seemed to think I was asking about socketing).
Caldesann’s Despair on helmet: Int boost
Diamond at Helm’s socket: CDR.
Gosh, I hope that’s correct. I’ve got a level 110 junk gem riding on this. If it doesn’t get me INT in a helm then I would use that junk gem on something else.
Which is why I want to be sure I am spending it wisely. If I can’t get INT in an Topaz-augmented helm then I would rather spend my nice Level 110 junk gem on some other piece of gear.
And, hey, I just remembered an old Tal Rasha build that I f*d up the helmet on. I dug it out of the armory and remembered that it was augmented for Vitality, of all things. And you can’t socket a helmet for vitality, so obviously the helmet gem follows the same rules.
Thanks for putting my mind at ease. I’ve never thrown such a high gem at a helmet.
