What does “soon” mean

as in “We’ll be back soon.” ? Will we ever see profiles again ?

I would suppose that if they knew, they would have said so.

Soon could mean next week, or next month. Or next year. Hard to say.

It means that acti.bliz cutting cost is in action and it will never be back because them gains are too much to give up.

Soon means in the near future but not right now. Usually meaning it’s on the list of prioirites but not on the top.

The word “soon” denotes an element in an open-ended interval of time. Thus “soon” has units of time and can be any specific value from “now” until the “end of time”* There is no way of knowing the specific time point of “soon” until it occurs.

When regarding anything dealing with any Blizzard however, “soon” is replaced with soon™ as they have used the term enough times to trademark the phrase at this point.

*: for those wondering when the end of time will happen, the longest time scale predicted for the universe is the Poincare Recurrence Time. The time scale for our universe is very long at around 10^10^10^10^10^1.1 years which denotes roughly the amount of time one would need to wait for the universe to reach the same quantum state again (so that we can be having this discussion again).

Other long timescales can be the heat death of the universe, at around 10^100 years (assuming protons decay). Or even sooner when the Earth will be eaten by the Sun in around 5 billion years.

“We’ll be back soon.” is basically a polite way of saying “We have no idea when we’ll be back, if at all.”

For example: The Epic Weapons website, the same organization that made the original Frostmourne replicas, have had “We’ll be back very soon.” on their website for the last…four years I believe. Still there to.

That means very soon actually, that’s a tech support soon unless it’s Blizzard’s Soon™ then that’s as they’ve described it on oldie forums.

Soon can mean a great many things, depending on your perspective.

You’ll be dead soon, in relation to the length of time to the inevitable death of the sun. Both of those are, possibly, a long ways off compared to how soon tomorrow will come.

So they’ll fix it. Soon.

Speaking of which, I just read this about Poincare Recurrence Time:

Yes, our Universe is approaching the empty de Sitter space – we are already pretty close to it, actually, because the cosmological constant dominates the vacuum energy (68% of it). It has a cosmic horizon (the boundary behind which we can’t see) and the degrees of freedom are formally living on that surface.

Via the holographic principle (in a somewhat less tested context), one may claim that this means that de Sitter space has a finite entropy so a finite-dimensional Hilbert space is enough to describe everything that happens in it (including the matter in not-yet-empty mostly de Sitter space, like the present Universe). If that’s so, the Universe we inhabit behaves much like any system with finitely many degrees of freedom, and it has Poincaré recurrences.

The Poincaré recurrence time is extremely long, something like exp(10120)exp⁡(10120) billion years – it is because the entropy of the de Sitter horizon is 10120kB10120kB (the cosmological constant is 10−12010−120 in Planck units or so). After this superlong time, approximately, events start to repeat themselves. At least in some sense, it is fair to say that the time is literally periodic.

This very long timescale is the ultimate “maximum duration” that may be discussed in physics. For example, if a calculation in field theory or string theory implies that the lifetime of a vacuum is longer than this Poincaré recurrence time, the decay is considered unphysical because “it cannot happen in time”, anyway.

The timescale is vastly longer than anything we have a chance to experimentally test. Each 10 billion years or so, the linear distances between galaxies double and the density of normal matter decreases by an order of magnitude. In hundreds of billions of years, a vast majority of the currently active stars will be inactive and even “new generations” of the stars will already be gone or dying. In trillions or certainly quadrillion years, there will be nothing left to energize star-powered life as we know it, and similar “local, more modest” sources of useful energy will be diminishing in similar ways.

It is hard to imagine that there will be any intelligent beings in a quadrillion years. This is still vastly smaller than the Poincaré recurrence time. And this result of the comparison is no coincidence. Of course that things must have a chance to “destroy any pattern” before the chaos has a chance to reassemble itself into the patterns again.
