Upgrade A Rare Item

Hi, Mr. Noob here with another noob question. What exactly happens when you upgrade a rare item in Kanye’s cube? Yes, I know it changes it from a Rare to a Legendary. But what does that mean other than changing the color from yellow to orange?
Also, any advice on when you should upgrade a rare item? I am thinking it upgrades it to a random legendary item, so you can’t depend on it giving you a specific leg item that you need to complete a set or get a specific power.
Thank You.

Lets assume thst you are upgrading a yellow wand. After using that recipe, you will get one of the legendary wands. Like other drops, there is a 1 in 10 chance that it will roll ancient. I think but don’t quote me on this if you have completed a greater rift 70 solo, then there is 1 in 400 chance the legendary wand would be primal. Which wand that drop as a legendary is primal.

The recipe for reforge a legendary (Law of Kulle) will remake a legendary. For example, if you put in the wand of woh, it will be rerolled as a new wand of woh with the aforementioned odds to be an ancient and primal.

You may get more help by posting in the New Player forum rather than General Discussion.

Yes. I’ll edit my post.

To clarify, Caldessan’s Despair will augment an ancient item. Law of Kulle reforges an item.

Thank you MicroRNA. Please don’t cringe with my next noob question. What is the advantage of an ancient or primal? I have a few ancients, but honestly, my legendary weapons/armor have more damage and toughness. My ancients don’t even have an legendary power attached. They seem no diff than my legendaries. So they are just sitting in my stash. I don’t wanna use them because I will lose the add’l powers on my firebird set.
Thank you

Thank You. So with Ancients, 1+1 does not equal 2. It equals more like 10. Apparently, there is a multiplier effect with ancients. My damage and life went up about 40%, but my toughness and recovery went down.

Not even sure what you meant there, however you have a sesonal character, for this season all characters get the effect of the legacy of nightmares rings, this set gives you 750% damage for each ancient item you are wearing so long as no other set bonus is in effect, outside seasons and without this bonus ancients can just be 30% stronger than they non ancient version.

As you’ve probably found out, ancients give you more of your primary attribute and vitality.

The roll using rec 3 in the cube will give you a legendary of the same type rolled, i.e. rare sword to leg sword. Some rares have a better chance to give you what you want. If you’re a DH and want to roll a Karleis Point the dagger pool is two, which means you’ll either get a KP or a Fan of Knives. The pool for rolling a fist for a monk is much larger so your chances of getting the one you want is less—not sure of this pool size, 1-10 ? (I’ve rolled a lot of fists.)

Besides getting perfect ancient main stat/vit rolls as well as the other attributes, a primal also ensure when you roll any stat at the mystic, it too will be rolled as a perfect stat.

Ancients have 30% higher attribute numbers than normal legendaries. Ancients can also be augmented to increase a main stat while legendaries cannot.
Primals are ancients with guaranteed perfect rolls of attributes (which are otherwise random). Keep in mind that while the rolls are perfect, you may have a crummy combination of attributes. They also can be augmented and it’s easier to re-roll an individual attribute at Mystic as they too are always perfect.

As Primals are essentially perfect versions of Ancients, there is little advantage to them over a well rolled Ancient. You should ignore Primals. If you get one and it rolls nicely, then consider yourself lucky! But don’t actively try to get Primals!

You should focus on finding an ancient version of a good weapon and offhand (if not dual wielding weapons). As these contribute to damage and their attributes are inflated by 30%, weapons and offhands increase your damage the most compared to other ancient items!

It gets arrogant and starts making some horrible, over-rated hip hop.

Sorry, couldn’t help myself.

Quietly slithers back out, the way he snuck in.
