Uliana Different Than Maxroll?

Hi. I am using the monk Uliana set but my gear and skills and everything is all very different from the maxroll one. Any ideas why the maxroll one uses such a weird setup?

Maxroll usually has several variants to their builds, depending on the activity. I usually pay attention to “GR Solo Push” because to me, that’s the “true” endgame - to push as high a GR as I possibly can. However, depending on what your current goals are, you may be doing a different activity and may wish to prioritize different things. Like, you probably wouldn’t want to equip Boon of the Hoarder during a GR since gold doesn’t drop until the very end - but during a T16 bounty/visions run? That’s tons of extra gold + very welcome movement speed that you can afford to slap in there most times because it’s “only” T16.

Also consider that while maxroll is very good, they’re not the absolute arbiter on all things D3 necessarily. It’s just a resource site. Much like a research paper or the like, it doesn’t hurt to get multiple opinions and sources. Check Icy Veins, check top leaderboard builds, or just make your own up and wing it! Use max or icy as a base but put your own spin on what is fun for you.

I think it was the solo gr push one. I just thought it was really strange it’s so completely different from mine. Like they use shenlong fists, and a spirit generator attack? No lion claw or flow of eternity or madstone or squirts. I have no idea why anyone would do it the way they have it set up when you can do it the way I have it set up

TBH a lot of the online guides are outdated or suboptimal. They can give you a decent guideline to get started, but if you want to serious solo push, just check the LBs. Those top 5-10 builds are set up the way to maximize your solo push. If you do not have the 8000+ paragon the top builds have, you may have to give up a few DPS pieces of gear or runes in order to add some toughness, but in general, those top builds are what you want for solo pushing.

Maxroll typically explains the reasons for the setup in the accompanying text. There is also a section for gameplay that explains how to play that setup and often times includes a skill rotation section.

That being said I have seen many setups that don’t make sense to my style of play so I use those as a guide and change it to suit what I want based on my experiences in game.

The push spec in maxroll suggests Flow of Eternity and Shenlong specs. You can access and switch between either of them from the small drop down menu of “Select Build Version” at the below of GR Push tab title in the Variants section.

The former, Eternity variant squeezes two SSS back to back in a single cycle of CoE; but compared to Shenlong variant at its peak, it deals lower damage. As a result Eternity variant is quicker but you really need a reflex check as CoE about to enter the cycle, at the other side Shenlong doesn’t have to fully rely on CoE yet it’s slower on the uprising.

I see now. The flow of eternity version is still missing madstone and squirts necklacs though. Idk why they are wasting time on generators and small damage uptime reliant on CoE which can really suck against things like Shielding, and exposing themselves to getting hit so much more and dealing with the belt which requires every SSS to hit the max times to upkeep, instead of just being always in SSS never having to use generator or exposing to get hit and 100% damage increase uptime all the time. That’s why I say it’s weird to me

just snapshotting, top tier skill stuff. have to pull every trick out of the book to get maximum damage so that the set makes an appearance at the bottom of the tier lists.

a set with the possibility to have one of the funnest gameplay mechanics, turned into a tedious annoyance due to snapshotting and spending most of your time walking around and begging for pylons. thanks TeamDiablo!

Builds under GR Push tab is meant to be sustainable in GR130-GR140 and so on, depending on the build. By taking Madstone, you ignore Spirit Guards, skipping on 150% toughness increase which can turn your barriers to be sturdier at high push Greater Rifts. Also not including Cyclone Strike just not worth the expense of losing opportunities for AD%.

That’s why Shenlong variant is preferred over Eternity variant.

If you have chosen your build for comfort, then it’s your preference. There’s nothing wrong or weird with this.

I have the impression that any Set can be flexible but you just need to explore your options.

The sanctified power they are using for this season may be the reason for certain choices. The Raiment Generator Monk build is very good this season so it isn’t a stretch that other builds may be able to take advantage of similar mechanics.

I have had the same experience but when I took a bit of time to read and understand what they were trying to do it became more clear. Some still didn’t make sense for what I wanted.

Idk why I’d use spirit guards and use generator skills, that would be time spent not in SSS. The 50% damage reduce you say I’m missing isn’t even close to the 100% damage reduce always being in SSS provides. This is why I say it doesn’t make sense. Cyclone strike is also unnecessary and obviously bad because you’re literally spending more time outside of SSS to bring enemies right to you to smack you in the face. Enemies are already grouped enough and attack as it is, you want to be in SSS for that. I just don’t get it

these two videos are what you want to see as far as s34 relevancy.

What GR are you pushing?

Well, technically, the best builds are on the leaderboards. You can check the top clears to get an idea of what items and skills to use.
But…
This can also be misleading, because the top spots are taken either by players with very high skill and perfect execution and/or players/bots with ludicrous ammounts of paragons. Also, keep in mind that all the top clears are probably done in Oreks Dream maps with good usage of pylons.

Usually these players go full on damage and don’t worry about toughness, and so, trying to copy their builds could make yours unplayable if all these parameters aren’t met. You have to make a call whether you can sacrifice toughness/utility for damage (and just rely on paragons for toughness and a perfectly placed shield pylon). Some seasons I’ve seen barbs with crazy paragons not using band of might but CoE or SoJ instead. If you try to do that early in the season you are 99% dead every time something hits you.

Usually, maxroll does a good job on their guides and you could follow these setups, at least up to a point where you feel comfortable with the build, and then start to spice things a little bit with more offensive choices.

In my case, I play the LoD Monk and while everyone seems to be using serenity (including maxroll), I go for Mantra agility. A bit lazier and one less cooldown to worry about (obsidian ring fuels just epiphany most of the time), and I still don’t die in GR150 even with 5 elite packs hiting me.

Is this a troll post?
There’s a reason on why no one in the leaderboard is using lionclaw and flow of eternity.
Maxroll has detailed descriptions of the gameplay, go and read them.
You need a generator to trigger the passive along with high area damage which is the key of the build.
